Im looking to plant a fairly fast growing hedge to provide a barrier between my garden and the farm land therefore must also be livestock proof

Hi All, Thanks for the comments. The hedge is just going to be trimmed on the front, sides and top. The previous owners had most of the hedge cut and from the back there is nothing apart from branches. I've checked and there are no birds nesting from what I can see; however, I've hung bird boxes at the back of the hedge. I'm in two-minds to keep the hedge or not now....I like the thin Italian conifers (forget the name of them) and even though I have just had 9 conifers felled the back end of March, I'm unsure whether to re-plant with the Italian conifers. There is a patio next to the house and it is a sun-trap. I would just like the garden to be modern, spacious, low maintenance.....will give the book a read, thank you credz4! I'll post a before picture up to show you what it was like!

Yes anon2005 I’ve just painted my new under the stairs cupboard in Dix blue and everyone who comes in the house says how much they like it. I’m really pleased with it. I’m toying with painting the whole hallway with it. I find Farrow and Ball colours work well in our UK bluish light, whereas some brighter colours can look a bit garish sometimes. I’ve even cheated when I couldn’t wait for it to come into stock and got it colour mixed at Dulux.

Sketch 4. Thought I’d design something more natural so made the lawn a nice large oval shape which should allow for lots more planting. Crescent shaped path round the edge so you don’t get mucky feet waking to the shed/summerhouse. Added a pond which should look fab near the house, imagine the sound of a bubbling water whilst you’re sitting on the patio. Very relaxing 😎, and great for nature as well. Couldn’t find much inspo with an oval lawn so I’ve added a random pic. Hope this gives you some inspiration and remember that it’s your garden so you can plan it to how you want it. I think it helps to identify what you’d like to use it for such as kids play area, do want grow veg, lots of flowers, entertaining friends (not now of course), just chilling out, that kind of thing. Also take note of where the sun rises and sets throughout the year as this can affect where you want to place seating areas and what you can plant where. P.s. Silver birch is lovely but they do grow big, I have one and the trunk has propped itself up on a concrete wall, currently approx 20 ft high. I’d still go for it tho but plant at least 4ft away from any fences.
