Need help with what to do with fireplace.
Comments (40)Hi again! For anyone that's interested, I have finally managed to have a go at my varnished stone fireplace and am pretty happy with the results… It's not perfect but makes a huge difference in terms of light in the room and cost me next to nothing! I used a tiny bit of annie sloan paint to dull and lighten the stone - my mum sent me leftovers of 'paris grey' that she had used on some furniture. The link I had found which described the painting process belonged to an artist, so I was aware that my results would differ quite drastically from hers, but I'm still happy! I also had a new mantlepiece made from old planks that my boyfriend has had stashed away for years - a carpenter we often use put it together for the equivalent of about US$10. We don't own the house so I haven't waxed the paint on the stone (meaning it can be washed off with water and a light scrub) and the new mantlepiece is literally slotted on top of the old one and discreetly screwed in place. It is no huge home improvement project but made a big difference to the feel of the room using minimal time, money and mess… Now just the rest of the room to decorate…!...See MoreInglenook and Beam
Comments (9)Not sure if the large green shrubs are the conifers.... At least they are evergreen, which your mixed hedge won't be and I suspect it will take quite a long time for the mixed hedge to grow and thicken up. I don't know how big your garden is but have you thought about 'blurring' the boundary rather than completely screening? You could put up trellis panels either side of the pretty Wendy house but set them about a foot away from either side, no taller than eaves height, about eighteen inches away from the boundary so they don't look like part of the fence. Paint the panels and Wendy house in a colour that tones with your house. You could even place other matching trellis panels of different heights, in line with the boundary but at different distances from the fence and gaps of a couple of feet between them so they don't make a solid barrier. Next summer you could grow sweetpeas against the trellis panels giving you some quick fix screening and fragrant flowers for the house. I would recommend square trellis rather than the fiddly diamond trellis. Failing that you could try and trim the conifers so they will eventually blend in with the mixed hedge....See MoreLiving room with large Inglenook
Comments (7)Hello, I would begin by looking at the style you are trying to achieve in the final space and most importantly how you want the space to work. Once you have this list you should know what furniture is required and general directions to put it etc. Alternatively you could help the help of an interior designer. We offer a range of services to fit your budget as do many other professionals on this site. You can do a single room redesign which gets you everything from colour analysis and shopping list to lighting plans and specifications. Or opt for a simple PDF report where we can make recommendations on the overall design of your room including layout, styling and colour schemes. Helpful if your on a budget but don't know where to start. Houzz is a great platform to find the professional right for you.. someone you click with that you believe can interpret what you 'want' into a design to suit your home and your lifestyle. Check out portfolios and reviews to get more information on professionals your interested in. I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck with your exciting new project!...See MoreHelp needed - Period 'fireplace-range' in Victorian terraced house
Comments (11)Hi all, Thanks for your comments. The vendor did leave behind the original doors for the house (and the cupboard doors). The flat was rented and so needed the fire doors pictured. We are planning on changing these and the tip of moving the hinges and light switch is great; thank you. Picture rails are definitely on the cards. a few of the other rooms have them already. We like the colour tone pictured below for the walls. Other suggestions always encouraged though. We'll keep the cupboard at the moment for convenience, but the plan is to either remove it entirely to reflect the other side of the chimney breast or put in fitted alcove storage on both sides, similar to the image below. We're wondering whether to strip the black paint off the fireplace-range to let the cast iron show and maybe re-paint the fireplace surround. We're also thinking about replacing the hearth . Keep those ideas coming :) Jamie...See MoreSolid Furniture Design
