Internal doors - White or natural timber?

When complimenting your interior with finishing touches such as doors and architrave do you prefer a bright white option or the classic look of natural oak or walnut doors?

White doors blend with the surrounding walls to create a contemporary modern interior. These doors are the ultimate in that they do not have architraves and use concealed hinges!

All depends on your home style and your taste really ... Some Victorian Houses can look stunning with graphite or black internal doors as a statement piece - some cottages suit oak latched doors - a modern apartment can look fab with minimal flat, wall coloured, doors... So we'd need a bit more info about the age and style of your home really !

Hi Jason, I like your creativity and I can see why the white melamine doors might appeal. I haven't used these specifically but have used high gloss painted solid timber doors and they were beautiful. These do have a timber effect on the edge which I would want to see at least photos of and I would consider the surface finish as a matt mottled door might be a little underwhelming in a gorgeous timber filled space. Melamine does last, but again so does timber. Timber when chipped can be fixed, melamine, not so easily. Also because there are no panels and the surface is very regular, you might notice scratches more than a 5 panel door or one with some kind of features in it (on white melamine scratches usually look darker). Plastic is heavy and so you will get a heavier feeling door, although a thicker door with well fitted hinges and handles will also give you a more solid feel. Also the sound quality coming from a melamine door will be different to a timber door (I am not bias from one to the other, I am just thinking of the things I would consider when thinking about the whole end result). Many of the developers I work with use Premdor, so the company is solid. To answer your question, I would always call them up and ask for samples of the melamine finish in a few different shades and gloss, matt and mottled. Then I would be confident with my decision. When guessing is involved you are relying on luck and that rarely goes too well. Doors are expensive, you want to love them when they arrive not hope for the best. In terms of being a pain to fit, I would ask for predrilled holes, but you will need to know your hardware and ironmongery or speak to your chippy first before ordering and see how much experience he has with it, as he has a very small margin of error! I’m with the keepers! I think you might end up devaluing your house if you took out all the original features such as the doors, latches etc. I think you need to experiment with some colours for the walls and look at replacing the carpet which is a bit of a cold grey colour. Also have you looked into the history of the house as I don’t think the leaded lights look like original arts and crafts style to me!

It’s ‘eggshell’, so it has a subtle sheen which I think works really well with timber doors. The colour is Farrow and Ball’s Off Black. I would advice against a pure black (if there’s such a thing...) which can look too stark. Are you considering other colours for your doors as well as (near) black?

Hi. It really depends on the style of your home. If you have a period home with solid wood doors then exposing the wood can bring a great warmth to the scheme. If you have a very modern home then open plan can work best. If you need to have doors consider sandblasted glass for allowing light through but retaining privacy.

I love the contrast timber doors can bring in a room that is painted with a light colour. Dark walnut against a white or light grey can look stunning.
