What was used for the clear coat?

If the metal continues to rust do you think it will eventually start chipping the clear coat off? I love the rust look and wish it could be preserved!

Our painter used a lacquer but he did clean the rebar first. If you are using it outside - a polyurethane it what you need to use.

Not really Adrian, no. You shouldn't use any other finish such as eggshell, soft sheen, silk etc due to the substrates high porosity so that leaves you with Matt emulsion. There are specific new plaster primers but they are often costly and unnecessary so yet again that leaves you with Matt emulsion. You can water the paint down to 80 percent water, 20 percent paint if you wish or 10 percent water and 90 percent paint - it really doesn't make much difference as long as the substrate is sufficiently primed. The purpose is to prime the new surface so 50/50 is ideal as it blocks out the plaster colour but that doesn't leave you needing to increase your top coat anymore then you need to to block out the white emulsion. All of this is available in any basic decorating book or even google. Don't take it personally but I see you give some really strange advice on here and a lot of it is incorrect which costs people time and money.

Hi, IMO, the alcove is too narrow and deep to be used for anything besides storage and therefore would be better with a door (hides away any sightly mess) Alternatively, if you are highly opposed to doors you could use some sort of curtain, or use storage baskets and organisers to create some open storage yet maintains neatness within the room (may not be so practical unless it's used to store items which are wanted but not used) Good Luck!

In which case, I would be inclined to go for clear and as you said, you can always add frosted vinyl. The only other slight consideration is what can you see in your house from the front door if someone was peering in. We changed ours as we changed our hallway and made a large double opening, so you could quite literally see all the way through into the kitchen and then out to the garden as the back of the house has a lot of glass. If it was more just a visible hallway I don't think we would have bothered changing it! We changed the glass in our downstairs toilet and the handyman got it wrong and used clear glass! We bought a cut to size frosted panel and it went on beautifully and works really well. You wouldn't know to look at it that it's not frosted glass. Definitely go for pre-cut though as cutting them yourself can look very amateur :)

On the two jobs that we used rebar - the homeowners wanted the rust look. However I know that steel wool will do the trick if you want a cleaner look.
