I would have attempted to do it myself had I been younger! In fact I hired a sander for a parquet floor in the 80's. Yours looks like it needs a bit of attention in securing loose blocks before putting a sander on it as they are rather fierce. I used South East Floors Ltd based in East Sussex. My floors totalled 22.7m2. Larger gaps were filled with matching filler and finished with two coats of Treatex Hard Wax Oil. It was hand sanded after first coat. They also fitted hardwood scotia round the skirting. The cost was £900.

Which do you prefer? The warm creamy hue of the fireplace or the cool hue of the walls? They don't go, but I'm not sure I would want to put paint on the stone. One reason they don't go isn't just the hue, it's the tone. They are both light and this is exaggerating the difference. Is it possible to keep the other walls in the room the pale grey and do just this wall and woodwork a much deeper colour?

Thanks for everyone’s comments really appreciated. To be honest re storage we do need baskets for the floor, would red seagrass go, and we get some red towels to match? It was really difficult to get mirrored bathroom cabinets with a gold surround , had to settle for silver edging, there’s a gap in the market for more stylish cabinets for sure!!
