POLL: How often do you water your plants?

My home is no stranger to a bit of greenery - not just because I'm a fan of it, but the sheer amount of plants I manage to get through is quite something. Keeping them alive is, well, a challenge.

So let's talk generally here - whilst it does depend on the type of plant, how often would you say you water yours? Daily, every few days, weekly, or perhaps less than you'd care to admit....

like you say it really does depend on the type of plant, and if the heating is on in the winter it ob. makes a difference, just get a spider plant and water it once a week half a mug of water should be plenty, or test the soil with your finger to see if it is dry.

I'm useless with plants and either under or over water them so they always die. I'm afraid the few house plants I have now are realistic fakes which just require the odd dusting, when I remember.

I never, ever change mine. I use a butcher block and a huge thick wooden cutting board, only taking care to keep my fruits from suddenly tasting like onions or garlic. Studies have shown that a wooden cutting board is naturally resistant to bacteria, so I scrape and then wash mine off with soap and water after use. All this absurd paranoia about cleanliness is the product of marketing, not science, and the supposedly more sterile plastic ones are actually much better petri dishes for bacterial growth, which is why they must be cleaned and disposed of regularly. Fine if you want to keep plastic cutting board manufacturers in China working, but not at all safer or cleaner.

Unfortunately, MRSA is all over, not just lurking in hospitals anymore. My nephew contracted it when he was about 18 months old. The doctors had strict guidelines to follow for prevention of further outbreaks for both him, and the entire family. My sister was told that everyone, not just families that are dealing with MRSA, should wash towels after every use with bleach as a means to kill any of the germs. bTW, my sister has always kept a spotless home, so it wasn't like this is a home with full of excessive germs.

We used to have friends over at least once a month but that has dwindled lately. I have to say though it is hard work with the cleaning and cooking and I normally spend hours choosing a menu whereby most of the food can be prepared in advance so I'm only in the kitchen for a few minutes. It also costs a fortune, there is always that worry that you'll run out of drink so we buy enough to stock a pub! Part of me thinks it's easier to go out for dinner to avoid the hassle but it is nice to be in your home so you can properly relax, talk as loudly as you want, play music etc and not rush to get on a train or something home

I think its really important to use a natural candle, scented or non scented, and not overloaded with scent either. The non natural ones are loaded with nasties!! you only have to see how they blacked the container, also not a good idea to use them when having a bath, the steam traps all the smoke under it so really you are breathing it in. Natural is really the clever choice, and they are not as expensive as you think, plus Soya wax burns slower :)

Having originally been told that orchids do best when you ignore them, I watered them very sparingly and very rarely. Last year my US cousin visited and said I wasn't giving my orchids enough water. I am now much more generous with the water (and some orchid food) and water them weekly. What a transformation! One has been in flower continuously since February. The others are growing healthy new leaves and I hope for stalks emerging and flowers following soon after.

I only have one living plant and its years old and big. It's a dragon tree and I water it when the fronds look a bit droopy. Probably only once every few weeks in the winter.

Depends on the plants and weather. I have plants which normally need to be watered daily, the ones which need watering every other day, the ones which may be watered weekly and those cacti which may wait for a month. But sometimes it's just way too hot and dry, and the soil gets dry pretty quickly, so I water them more often. And sometimes it's raining so hard and long outside that I almost feel like my house is slowly turning into swamp, so I stop watering for a while or skip some watering sessions. I mostly rely on the feel and look of the soil in each certain flowerpot and my knowledge about how that plant prefers it.

It does depend on the plant and its needs but a drop once a fortnight here and there seems to keep everything here it tip top shape. We try to keep all plants out of direct sunlight which usually helps to prevent drying out quickly too.

Remember that if the plant seems to be drooping it doesn't always mean it's thirsty. it may be over watered. In which case just lift it out of its saucer and leave it to dry out. I had a problem there where my husband was also watering the plants without my realising it. More importantly though if your plants keep dying they likely aren't getting enough light.

I also am useless with plants, I either kill them with kindness or neglect them entirely. My only success is an Aloe Vera plant in my kitchen window which comes in handy for burns etc.

I have a chain cacti which is 50 years old. grew from a cutting. I forget to water it often.

I water plants when they need watering, Cacti, agave, Echeverias would not normally be watered in winter at all. Other tropical plants are watered quite often depending on the weather, give plants the conditions they would require in their native countries.
