Paved terracotta poolside area needs help

Paved pool area (in Sydney) gets FULL westerly facing sun, & we need to furnish it and place some large garden pots. Am looking for outdoor furniture ideas and also suggestions for pot colours

for lemon and lime trees. What other plants could I also use?

Hi Vicki,

I just got back from Sydney! The weather was beautiful and Im lamenting over the warm sun, but enjoying the festive season in the UK. I am not a plant expert, so maybe a landscape expert or gardener could help you with that part of your design. Architecturally a backdrop / screening plant would make the space feel private and inviting - unless you wanted to screen with battens, curtains or sails of some kind. I would screen with something light looking (as in native and fine, I love grasses but seem to get weird responses when proposing them...)

I put a quick collage together for you, it is just an idea board to give you some ideas about what I would have done, if this was my patio (totally jealous by the way!)

Hi Vicki,

The first thing that springs to mind is a Moroccan inspired outdoor rug, like this one. I think this would really help to add some texture to this outdoor space. In terms of furniture I think a rattan sofa set would be a great addition, especially a light colour like this one.

In terms of planters I think a large rattan planter to match the style of the sofa set would help with a consistent theme, but alternatively I would suggest a coloured planter to contrast with the terracotta. Perhaps a light cream, or teal if you want a bright pop of colour.

I would personally forget about painting the fence. Not because I like the orange, but because I'm lazy and I would rather invest my time and money in plants and soil (improvement of) and big planters or raised beds if you're going for that. If you plant climbers against the fence, most of it will be hidden anyway. And if your plants get larger, they will hide most of the fence too. I have solar powered lights in my garden and they give a lovely atmosphere at night. Mine are from Ikea. I have fairy lights along a fence and different kinds of lights that you can just put anywhere you like. Would be lovely to dot some lights around in your garden too.

I think with such a small garden I would create a patio courtyard garden rather than a lawn. Tiny lawns are rarely successful, especially when you have a dog. I got rid of my lawn as the dogs had turned it into a pee ridden mess! I laid Indian sandstone instead. Plus points are your fencing looks great as does your shed. I would remove the washing line and get a retractable one, so you can pull out when in use and it pops back into its casing when not in use. So much tidier! Im thinking extend the patio, but leave borders of 1 metre all around for planting. If you don’t do this it has too much of a car park look. You won’t need raised beds unless you particularly want them. I can suggest plants if you wish. Here’s some ideas, the first pic is some of my garden.

These are my Japanese acers, I selected the shorter varieties since the drive isn't huge. The red one is approximately 10yo, the other two are 6-7 yo. They grow quite slow and stay compact,in my opinion. I tried to take the photos in front of our Cooper so you get the idea of the sizes. They are Garnet (2+ m) Bi Ho (2m) and Winter Flame (1.5m and it grew 50cm during the last three years). Acers can be shaped, I'll be removing some lower branches to add some structure. They are gorgeous in autumn and passers-by often stop to admire.

A few things strike me. Firstly cutting that grass with a lawn mower not a strimmer should be a lot quicker. My front and back lawn must be about is at least 150 square meters and my teenager can do the lot in less than half an afternoon. Anyway, if you really hate doing it, that’s probably a pointless comment 😂. However, £7000 could probably buy a lot of hired lawn mowing service or a robotic mower as someone mentioned. Secondly, I know Sonia’s garden looks lovely and you probably think you couldn’t do it but I bet you could. Keeping things alive in planters is much more difficult as they will dry out more quickly, run out of nutrients and constantly need refreshing. If you gave yourself quite a deep border into the point of your garden (where you currently have a tree in the diagram) you could plant some decent size shrubs too that would probably only need an annual trim. I would also consider growing something up the fence to soften it a bit. Maybe your bottom right green circle could have a water feature in it? Or something to give a bit of height like an obelisk to grow climbers up. I wish I knew how to add photos from Houzz for inspiration. Otherwise, I think your mock up looks lovely and your seating area within easy reach of the kitchen will be great. Just out of interest, where do you get the sun most?
