Flooring/heating

We are renovating and will have a large open plan kitchen diner approx 8x5m with half vaulted ceiling. We are exploring the possibility of underfloor heating but would mean digging out and relevelling the floor which is very costly and not within our budget.
The floor is concrete and so is very cold under foot. What flooring would maybe add some insulation to the floor ie help retain any heat in the room.

Any other ideas on heating flooring welcome, thank you.

Hi Sally,

Have you looked at electric under floor heating matting? It's a much more cost effective option and requires a lot less work. If you have, and it is still out of the question - engineered wood flooring, with insulation underneath will be your best option for retaining the heat.

Hi Sally. We have just had a large kitchen extension and used 'Warmup' electrical under floor heating system. Its gorgeous underfoot. Have a look at their website.

Underfloor heating is lovely underfoot - but do remember - with all those shiny surfaces - You might find it could be quite echo'y !! Consider a rug in the soft seating area or dining area if you have one . It's a good idea to plan not just the kitchen - but the whole extended room - as one affects the other at the same time. Think about situations like if the kids and their friends are all on the stools at the island anyone wanting to get past will have to shimmy past you working at the sink - and if the DW is open this might be even more difficult ! In such a big space all of a sudden you can see things have got a bit tight ! Also, large drawers are great for storing stuff in - and although they cost more than cupboards - they are much easier to use and see what's in them etc consider having lots more of those ! Hi Corrine, we are just in the process of having wet UFH system installed. We are doing a major renovation to create a large kitchen / diner / living space but had no requirement to dig the floors up, so chose a low profile system that goes over our existing concrete floors. We had 50sq meters fitted on 4 zones and the cost was £2,400 (we got a trade discount thanks to our amazing interior designer) from the underfloor heating store. I can't yet comment on its efficiency but a few notes on the install process to date; the low profile systems that they say are super easy to install and you can do yourself are actually a real faff and quite difficult. The instructions aren't difficult to follow, however even with our team of 5 builders it took two full days to lay all the panels and wrestle the pipes into place as they are incredibly stiff and difficult to manipulate. If I were to do it again I would go with one of the companies that also fits (was about £3000 more expensive than supply only at about £5500). My other recommendation would be to just be aware of different floor heights and floor coverings if you use a system to go over existing floors; we are having real wood floors in our hallway and living room which is incompatible with UFH (the UFH area is all limestone tiled). We have therefore had to baton our hallway and living room to lift the floor level up to the same as the kitchen / diner / living area. Also be mindful of existing doors- I hadn't realised (stupidly!) that we would have to trim all our doors to accommodate the system and went ahead and ordered bespoke new doors for the renovation... in the exact same size as the old ones! Oops! So now they need trimming too! Overall we've ended up with a beautiful looking space that is hopefully toasty warm and gives us the freedom to put our furniture anywhere we want! I have a wet under floor system throughout the house with wood -look ceramic tiles downstairs It is cosy economical, controlled with thermostats, no radiators, and cleaning is so easy and quick( hoover and steam karcher). My daughter has underfloor heating powered by a biomass boiler. Two friends have regretted their dual fuel wood burning stove because of the uneven heating and mess it created. Though it does look lovely and cosy in winter and makes great toast, it is far more fashion than function.

You can use electric underfloor heating, would not require digging up the floor and is great for a one-off area in your home. Try using an insulating layer like Orbry Tile Backer Board to keep the heat from being lost below the floor.

There are a few electric underfloor heating suppliers. You need to check out how much it costs to run with each supplier. There is a difference.

I have it in both my bathrooms and it's wonderful in the winter. Wouldn't be without it.
