Name your home!

One of the things that sets the UK & Ireland apart from its European counterparts (other than the obvious these days) is our tendency to name our homes. Wherever you go, you're bound to find a charming little cottage, dubbed something equally so.

For the fun of it then, if you could name your home anything, what would it be? What would capture its very essence best?

Let us know! I think I'd call mine The Nook - perfect little spots for reading, but a little too small to fit me into it...

I'm building a house at the moment in an old garden beside the sea. On the first day of construction, when I watched the effort it took to breach the old sea wall which bounds the site, I thought I might call it Jericho. Currently, as I deal with neighbours from either side and across the road, watching like hawks to see what they can complain about, I'm considering Gaza - as in the Gaza Strip. Hoping that when the house is finished they may revert to being normal - maybe even pleasant - human beings, in which case I may call it Bali Ha'i, from South Pacific, which my mother named a house I lived in as a child and which evokes all the positives of home.

Probably 'The Hog Run' as we have a very active family of hedgehogs, which love nothing better than legging it around our garden..

We've had the 'Pockethome' heating system by Elektrobock installed for a few years now and have found it to be fantastic - separate time- and temperature- control of every room. Must say, though, that I'm considering an upgrade to the Honeywell Evohome system. Mostly on spurious aesthetic grounds but possibly justifiable for consumer research on behalf of clients! Hopefully the technology will remain sufficiently open to avoid the old VHS / Betamax battle...

We have several robins that hop into our house and feed from our hands. When we come into the house, one of them will often just hop along right behind us into the kitchen. Would love to name the house after the robins but 'Robin's Nest' does sound a little naff!

We moved into "Vejemi Cottage" two weeks ago... name was made up of the previous previous owners (Vera, Mike and someone else I think!) we got our friends to think of names on Facebook and had about 100 ideas. Settled on Bluebell Cottage as we live next door to "Snowdrop villa " although I liked also September Cottage for when we moved in and Juniper Cottage to mark my love of gin! We decided bluebells were prettier than juniper.... this week we will plant lots, just in case there aren't any!

Didn't the Victorians like to name their villas after their garden trees? Copper Beeches for example. So ours would be Monkey Puzzler?

I would call ours monkey puzzle if we had one, a fab tree and fab name! We tried for Acorn or Oak cottage and Pear Tree but all had gone in our postcode area of about a square mile

we don't have a name for our house but before the glass roof went on our extension it looked like a bunker and the name has stuck

We live in a victorian mid terrace. Dates early 1880's. My dad was researching the men of Worthing who had been killed during the First World War. I commented how I would be interested in knowing if one had lived in our house. A few months later he called to say somebody by the name of Borane had lived there, a couple of weeks later he had found a gentleman called Anderson also had been living in our house and the following day research showed somebody called Dyer resided in our home. Apparently the family who owned the house took in waifs and strays. Sad really. Our house is now known as Borane, Anderson Dyer Cottage. We always place a poppy on the name plaque on 11/11.

One piece of advice I'd give on naming a house is make it a real word that's easy to spell. My house has a ridiculously odd name and I get confused looks everytime I say it then I have to spell it out slowly. It's had that name for centuries so I wouldn't change it.

Brodgar. My mum's family name was Orcadian and last summer while family were staying with me in Caithness we did a road trip to Orkney and visited the standing stones. I live in a new development - my neighbours are sticking with numbers- but I'm putting the name up over my garden office. (Although I was tempted to call it Lallybroch)

For my mum and dad for a wee gift when I moved out I bought a brass plaque house name plate (it was the 90s). After much thought I decided the name Jimara was nice. Dad being called Jim, mum Marjory and myself Alexa. They loved it. :-)

My home is a converted barn and was already named The Shippen when we bought it. I have to spell it for EVERYONE, 'The Shippen S-H-I-P-P-E-N'. The Cow Shed would have been better!

I lived in the Shetlands for 5 year nearly and our old croft was called. Sheencrest... Next door was called Quee... Every home had a name... We don't have name now... But it's called "Home Sweet Home ". for me... Love where I live.. Just been here for 2 years and trying to it our own stamp on it...

We have just had it all newly painted in a colour called Sunway... Pale lemon... And a red brick tops... I suppose Sunway would be a nice name too...?

Living in a rural area, none of the homes are numbered so we had to choose a name for our place. We got together as a family and threw some suggestions about. Eventually it was between 2 and we let the children decide. It was shortly after the first 'Lord Of The Rings' film came out and so the name they plumped for was influenced by that. I'm glad they chose it now as we get so many people commenting what a great address we have, especially paired with our street name - so, we live at 'Rivendell, Devils Highway' which, luckily, is actually as picturesque as it sounds and I think pretty cool

I'd call our house 'Tahunanui' after a place in New Zealand, as my hubby is from near there and I love the name.

Such a topical conversation. I live in the Shetlands and my house name is Litlapund. Sorta Pronounced: "leetlapthuund" in shetland dialect....or something like that! I am from USA and it's Impossible to say my own home name in shetland dialect and therefore must change the name. Our home is situated between my 3 aunties, and across a small field from my mother and catty corner from my cousins. The house overlooks the sea and was built on my grandfathers land. Sometimes we celebrate up and down the street in a family "pub crawl". Naming convention ideas!!

We had nothing and needed everything when we got married, so the house was called Shasta,..... she has to have.

Ours is Jasmine, next door is Rose and then Fern & Lavender. We don't have house numbers so they have always been named. A friend of mine has just moved from Holly Cottage to Ivy Cottage

I stayed with friends in a lovely cottage named "Weavers" in Coney Weston (near Bury St. Edmund's in EA). It was built in 1690 and was originally owned by a weaver of cloth. Interestingly, many of the historic homes and plantations in the American South have names. Many of them are hauntingly beautiful, such a Shadows on the Teche. Also, we tend to name our vacation homes rather than our primary residences.
