What to put up at doors??

We need to cover our doors in the evenings/night to give us privacy. The room is fairly small and I worry that curtains will make the room feel smaller, although I like idea but wouldn't know what colour either! The door is the only access to the back garden and to the rubbish bins. We couldn't use fitted blinds that go on windows as they would get wet in bad weather (the doors open outwards).
Any ideas??

Hi Allison, the room look amazing so far. I agree re curtains, I think they would make the room feel smaller. Have you considered a roman blind hung on the outside of the door recess? (See below). It wouldn't interfere with the doors and would provide the privacy you need whilst taking up minimal space. You may need to move the sofas slightly away from the door, if possible.
There are lots of amazing fabrics around at the moment in the colour of your sofas. A contemporary geometric shape would look amazing and create depth without being too fussy. Really hope all that helps, good luck.

You could do curtains on a very wide rail so that the curtains can be pulled to the sides and completely out of the way when not in use. Have you considered carrying on with the lovely blue around the room? The curtains could then have a lovely pattern that pulls all the colours in the rooms together.

I personally wouldn't be covering it with doors, you have that amazing Velux window that would let a heap of light into your room. If you really wanted doors I'd get French doors like the picture without the mirrors so that you're still letting that light in but also making it a shut off area. Then maybe get a blind for the Velux!

Hi there I am looking for some help with the set up of doors and windows for the opening on our second story extension. I was originally going to put in the accordion style doors so the whole wall can open up to outside but I have been put off because of all of the ‘frames’ required. The opening for the main balcony is 4.7metres (width) by 2.1 metres (height) The other opening (not pictured) is 5.6 metres wide. This leads out to a thin balcony which will hav no furniture and joins to the main one where I will put some seating. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what combination of doors and windows would work best? Thank you for your help

You could always ask the question. Being a kitchen supplier myself l have lost count of the number of price increases we have had on carcases, fascias and worktops. lt seems never ending and of course in January 2023 yet another increase. Alternatively could you find another supplier that offers the same design of kitchen or something very similar that is prepared to adjust their price to suit your budget. If it’s £1500 extra then your supplier will loose £750 and if that were me l would say no. The market is unstable at the moment.

Hi, I have a similar problem. My local double glazing manufacturer suggested venetian blinds that fitted INSIDE the double glazed units. They can be open & closed, up or down. It would mean replacing the current glazed units, but at around £300 for both doors, it's quite a bargain as they never need cleaning!

Hi Allison

Curtains don't necessarily need to make a room feel small. The effect they have depends on the fabric used.

Is there space to move the sofas away from the door at all? This would allow space for curtains that you could hang from a simple pole. The pole would ideally extend approx 15-20cms either side of the door so that the curtains have space to stack back.

To keep them from making the room feel small whilst keeping them practical, you could have them made in an off white fabric but put a deep contrast binding along the base in the same colour as your feature wall.

Moving the sofas into the room would also allow you to put a couple of lamps beside them - either sitting on small lamp tables or you could use floor standing lamps. This assumes, of course, that you have some sockets that you can plug them into.

Thank you all. I like the idea of the Roman blind, and the patterns too.
There is room to move the sofas away from the wall a little, for curtains to fall. Do you think a pole rather than a normal track?
We have a long arm swing lamp on the wall, so dont think we need any more lighting.
We thought that brining the colour round the room might make the room feel smaller - would it?

If it's curtains you choose then use a ceiling mounted track

right up at the point where the wall meets the cam of the ceiling. A simple wave or pinched heading with the track the full width of the room

alternatively with your blinds also have them hang from as high as you can go . If you want them to virtually disappeared match to your paint colour

or go as wild as you want if you wish them to be the thing that pulls the room together

Hi Allison. Yes, I would suggest a pole rather than a track. You could go for a slim black one to bring a touch of black to that wall (a nice balance for the porthole mirror and the painting you have on the other walls). I completely agree with Lally, but if blocking out light isn't a concern I would choose very light sheer fabric. Something with a tighter weave will give you more privacy.
As others have said, putting the pole or track as high and as wide as you possibly can will actually give the impression of a taller and wider room. Keep the fabric light and the heading simple and it should look great.

I don't think that painting the whole room the darker colour would make it look smaller. I think it's more a case of deciding whether you want a darker room or a light one. As you've got the feature wall already, I thought the darker colour might appeal. Painting all the walls would give it nicer ambiance imo + you'd have a greater choice of curtains. With a white wall by the French door, you really need a white curtain too as has been suggested. I'm worried that it in the end half the room could look light and soft ( especially if you choose a lightweight curtain fabric) with a big dark wall that doesn't work. Hence I suggested carrying on painting the other walls as the colour itself is fab.

Have a look at Ikea's panel curtains, I've always thought they look very smart but may cover the window too much for you...
