Design Dilemma Lighting Kitchens

The right lighting for kitchen with no natural light availability.

I'm converting a garage into a kitchen and I need help & advise with lighting as it's not possible to have any natural light, not even light tunnels. Please help!

Hi, stacey -- the layout is of course the first thing to get right, following that you can mimic daylight by hiding the light sources in both the cabinets and around the edges of the room -- layering the light is key, so that you don't have just one bright source. Luckily LEDs these days don't cost the earth! It will be important, however, to create the places in which to hide the light sources, which may mean making adjustments to walls and ceilings....

Getting the right quality of light for different times of day and night is a good idea too - so during the day have 7000k which is more like daylight switched on ... then in the evening a warmer light might be easier on your eyes and feel more in keeping with popping into the kitchen to make a cuppa in the ad breaks - but if you are doing fine work you can put the brighter lights on ( so you don't chop your fingers !)

I would say there's nothing you can do about the trees. If they were my trees i'd be a little miffed at being asked in the first place. After all, you took the house on knowing what it was like, and if the trees are that large, then they've been there a very long time. However, there are things that you can do to brighten your home, especially in an extension. Having a flat roof with a roof lantern will draw the light in. The only time that the angle of light is affected will be in the winter months, as the sun surely has to be higher in the sky than the trees throughout most of the year. Having a pitched roof with sky lights will angle the light backwards. We have a similar issue here, the back of our house is north facing. We installed a glass roof on our conservatory and the difference to the light levels was considerable. Also, we have daylight bulbs in the kitchen / diner / conservatory ( all open plan - helping again ), the bulbs make a big difference too. So, don't despair, pinch the light from a different angle which will currently be restricted by your windows.

There is no 'right to light' in the UK. You may be referring to an easement under the Prescription Act 1832 which says that after 20 years of natural daylight you cannot build a new structure which blocks that window without permission.

Here’s an example of how to use the method above. All measurements taken are using the device’s own internal light source which is called D65. So straight away you are comparing colours from the same starting point. Using the device, I took measurements of Maggie’s stunning marble work surface. To the naked eye, it appeared a white slab with light grey & dark grey veining. However when measured, the white majority of the slab belonged to the yellow Hue Family & the darkest veins sat in the Yellow-Red Hue Family. Taking further sample measurements of the stone slab flooring, confirmed they too sat in the Yellow Hue Family. So to tie both flooring and work surface together with colour for the island & kitchen units, it made sense to begin looking for colours within the same Hue Family. Getting a Hue Angle reading gives a spot to plot it on the Wheel. The info also gives other key attributes for each colour, making comparison much simpler. Maggie knew she wanted a dark colour for the island, a mid tone for the cupboards & something lighter again for the walls. It’s a new mode of working for most of us home owners, but it’s actually just working with the information companies use to make the colours in the first place. And so it’s a much more objective starting point to finding the right colour for the job. I wish you lots of luck on your quest!
