What's your favourite city?

A recent trip to Berlin (and the wonderful Houzz office might I add) convinced me that this was a place I could see myself living in. You know that feeling of excitement, that rush you get when you're in a place that feels, well, just right? Berlin and Copenhagen have both given me that, which triggered this discussion in my mind, that is, what's your favourite city? If you had to settle in one, which would it be?

Melbourne for the relaxed vibe, Mumbai for the buzz, Rome for the style! Sorry couldn't pick just one! I think London maybe encompasses all of those traits so on reflection my vote is for London.

It would always vary depending on where I was going and why. A leisurely stroll with the dogs is one thing, doing the weekly shop is another, as would be travelling from home to the city. My ideal would be to be transported in a chauffeur driven 1930s Rolls Royce Phantom III limousine, but that's never going to happen.

Debanger3, yes, pigs in blankets are sausages wrapped in bacon. It's usually smaller sausages but can be larger. They are sometimes also drizzled with a little Worcestershire sauce and honey before they are baked in the oven but everyone has their own preferred way of doing them, with or without additional flavours. They are traditionally served with roast turkey at Christmas. And are often what you are given (with other nibbles) at drinks parties. What type of fireplace is your favourite?

When we extended our house last year with a large fireplace we wanted a multi fuel burning stove. However the regulations regarding flue and chimney meant the neighbours would have been subjected (and may have objected) to this eyesore, even if at the back of the house. We settled for a Gas version. The stove itself (Huntington) looks exactly the same as the multi fuel version. However, we are really delighted with it. The flame looks really genuine and as others have stated there is no cleaning out and we have instant heat and sometimes so much output that we no longer have to turn on the central heating in the lower rooms! A real success. (Awaiting our first gas bill however).

New York! I was fortunate enough to have lived and worked there for 3 years and it was heart-rending to leave and come back here. I just loved the feeling you could be who you are, dress up, dress down, it didn't matter. It was exciting, noisy, friendly & there was always something new that made me feel alive. Whenever I go back its just like I'm slotting in back home. So many happy memories.

My favourite is Rome, I relax as soon as I arrive. As we've done the sights it's a perfect place for mooching and just sitting in a cafe or bar and watching the world go by. However for somewhere to live we've always said if a job opportunity were to arise we'd go to New York. We had quite an extended trip there a few years as we got stuck when the Icelandic volcano erupted so ended up seeing a few places off the normal tourist trail (plus we needed to find some much cheaper places to eat as time went on!)

My home town of Glasgow, I've been to France, Italy Belgium, Florida and California as well as many cities in the uk, but my heart stays in the city of my birth. I know it's not perfect but it's perfect for me

I've lived in Toronto, Sydney and London. All fab for different reasons. I've made London my home now (well just outside because I can't afford to live there anymore) but my heart lies with Paris. How I wish I'd paid more attention in French class growing up...

From the first time I visited a few years ago up until a couple of months ago I would have shouted 'DUBAI!' from the rooftops.
Not long ago, my mum rightly observed that wherever I travel to for the first time seems to be my favorite city!
When we took a trip to Rome not long ago I was charmed by the Romans for the affection they showed, which made me adore the city even more and longed to go back. Italian coffee - latte macchiato to be exact - and 'gelato' were a great influence too.
I very recently went to Madrid for the first time for just a couple of days and upon returning, I had already started making plans in my head, to learn Spanish and even made a playlist of some Spanish songs which I listened to on repeat for a week!
From there I travelled to Vienna also for the first time and I thought hmmm now this is my fave city, even better than London where I studied for my degrees and call a second home. Then I returned to London a couple of weeks later and decided London cannot be beaten.
On the plane to London I read a quote which I feel describes to a great extent, the way I feel about a lot of the cities I visit and it goes: "...I think home is just where you base yourself to pursue your goals at any given time. Life's too short for home to always mean the same coordinates."
On the recent trip to Vienna, I got a job offer which I excitedly accepted and I am glad it is in one of my favourite cities and hope it will remain my favourite while I'm living there!

Some great suggestions here. For some reason many people don't like the hussle and bussle of London but for us it is definitely one of our favourite cities. Even all our tradesmen like to get there for work! There's just some sort of a buzz and excitement about the place that we find addictive :)

Groeningen in the Netherlands ! No cars allowed - all bikes, on foot or boats ! Simply wonderful !!! Oh - and full of lovely people - one particular fab shoe shop gives you a bottle of wine to take home and enjoy with your purchase !!! Now that's customer service !!!! :-)
