Can anyone tell me what the proper name for this type of handle is? I'm trying to find online but struggling as don't know their name or how to properly describe. Thanks!

I'd google 'finger pull' or 'edge pull'...

Isidora, that is why I have door knobs, I used to have a Springer Spaniel who could open every door, cupboard and window in the house (even mastering childproof latches on cupboards) The only way to keep her in, or out of, a room was to lock the door. Not content with her own escapology she then taught my brother's Lab how to open doors. I do understand that handles are easier for people with grip problems and I have oval door knobs which are a halfway compromise.

Ah, I understand. The hanging mechanism of mine has a spring which means that the door doesn’t fold up tight against itself - there would not be enough room for a lever handle, but the cup handle is fine. If you don’t have enough space perhaps flush fit handles would work? There are modern versions, but I rather like flush fit ring pulls. These are mostly intended for cabinets, but Willow and Stone sell some lovely examples in different sizes, and big enough to use on a folding door.

You may be overthinking it. The thing to consider with black is that it tends to be the 'boss' in the room if placed next to anything very pale, especially white. This means that (for example) a black fridge on a white wall would be the first thing you would see. This is why huge black TV's on a white wall are a terrible eyesore because they dominate a space. Consider testing 'Stirabout', it's a bit deeper and warmer than Skimmning Stone.
