Built in shelves will make the best use of space, and as you say, needn't cost thousands. Painted timber will be a cheaper option than finished timber simply because it is more forgiving (i.e. gaps can be filled or caulked then painted).
You are correct that you should approach a carpenter. It would vastly help if you could show images of example shelving you like.

Comments (6)I've tried several different types of floating shelves and never found them sufficiently robust. They always seem to slope down at the front and I haven't even tried to put anything on them as heavy as a book. It may be that I'm not paying enough for them, I have bought them from the various retailers such as B&Q and homebase. We recently bought a new development condo and at the moment we don’t have shelves to display stuff/books. initially I was planning on hanging the TV above the ventless fireplace and doing a built-in like the picture however my neighbor just said he is having issues with his TV above the fireplace bc it gets too hot so now I am concerned and wondering if we are better off keeping the TV where it is, getting a bigger painting to hang above the TV(current one is just a joke and way too small) and doing floating shelves to the right that are longer since I think doing a built in on only one side would look silly. - 7 years agoHello A and S thanks for your response. the dimensions are approximately 46 inches in length and 7.5 inches in depth / width . unfortunately width is small as it has been restricted by the French Doors which is right beside the space
