How to style a fake "wood burner" with no chimney breast?

Hello, I have been scouring the internet for ways of designing a room to incorporate an electric heater that looks like a coloured enamel wood burning stove. Specifically, I'm looking to incorporate it into my young son's room because the radiators are woefully inadequate in heating the space and it is too cold in the winter so I would like to use an electric heater but wanted to make it look like it fits rather than have one of those ugly modern things! There is no chimney breast to open up otherwise I would probably do that. :)

Hi Kirsty,

I think its a lovely idea to make a real feature out of a heater for your son. I assume you're not in a position to just upgrade the present radiator as this would probably be the simplest and most affordable option (in the long term anyway)?

There's a number of ways to help the stove heater look more integrated. My personal preference I think would be to run a strip of brick slips/tiles up a section of wall behind the stove position with a hearthstone under. You could even use textured tile effect wallpaper on some hardboard so its even more affordable and easy to remove at a later date.

Another simple option I think would just be to place it in a free corner, again with a hearth underneath. This should help it appear grounded and it will be less noticable that its not in the traditional chimney breast opening.

Finally you could attach a mantle to the wall and paint/tile the opening or again use brick slips to frame up the stove. My only worry with this is it makes it quite obvious that its fake but that might not bother you if you like the idea of him having a mantle top to put pictures on etc. I'm not keen on the example pic I found style wise but it shows what I mean.

For real authenticity you could buy a flu/black pipe to fix to the stove and ceiling but that might be overkill!

That's a funky wood burner! Here's their website: http://dovre.co.uk/stoves-fires/vintage-50-wood-stoves/. I think you should get the bigger one for that size room and that size fireplace, but check with them because you want the correct output for the room, not just the look of it (you give them the dimensions of the room to work out which size you need to get the room warm). If the chimney really has been removed, please get a builder around who can come and work out how and if it can be reinstated unless that is an outside wall behind your fireplace and you can have the flue go through the back of it.

Hi, I recently designed a kitchen where the range cooker was located in the chimney breast for clients as part of a side return extension, there are a couple of things to look out for: - Is the opening size of the chimney enough for the cooker with tolerance on either side. - The chimney breast will most likely not have an opening height suitable for the height of the cooker so it may need to be raised. Check this dimension and also the clear height that the extractor unit needs to be above an electrical or gas hob. - On raising the opening height the contractor needs to insert a new lintel but we also found the chimney to be completely solid inside and not hollow as we thought so there was no room for the casing of the extractor unit. The contractor basically had to rebuild the chimney breast to suit the requirements for fitting in the extractor unit and having a higher opening which was time consuming and fiddly as we wanted to re-use the Victorian brickwork and have an exposed brick chimney. The end result looked great but I would advise to proceed with caution, it is not as straightforward as it looks or maybe our chimney breast was uniquely challenged. Thank you both. Jen P, we would have loved a wood burner but because of the flue it wouldn't work. We also considered an inset electric but to get one that looks anything close to real we would be looking at £500 plus , basically what would only be used for the visual effect rather than heat we really can't justify such a cost. The budget has already been blown! We also considered creating an opening and filling with logs and fairy lights but that's only possible if we have the false wall. Dog temporarily replaced by child! :) He'll be back.. Minnie101, thank you I think your reference to the roof might have solved why it looks ok on floorplanner but not in the actual house.

That stove can be placed against a flat wall with pipe open so as long as your chimney breast can take the stove pipe I personally think it will be fine. I don’t think it will look wrong if the bench is deeper and if your room is normal sized it will probably be better??
