Nice detailing. How did you achieve the staircase/floor junction?

Well done avoiding the use of any trim at the bottom of the staircase. How did you hide the expansion gap in the flooring?

I was not involved in the installation of stair and flooring but as far as I remember, the stair has a steel structure bolted to the floor. The floor is engineered timber so the expansion gap would be relatively small, just a few millimetres, and would work without any masking or filling with sealant. Sorry not to be more precise.

Am so glad I asked for your advice! Hadn't thought of using glass, but am now thinking that might be a good idea. The stairs are currently in the dining room, but we plan to remove a wall so they will be part of open plan kitchen diner once that's done. As for our style, I feel a bit lost as what our style is right now having just moved and inherited carpets/decor etc from the previous owners. I'm not sure the shabby chic look we had in our previous home works here! Thanks again everyone!

The diameter will only apply if your putting in a spiral, which I'm guessing your not. As said above, building regs say 900mm for accessible stairs, This is for the allowance of a stairlift should one be required in future. But since yours is a conversion, if you have step up to your property or doorways that aren't wide enough for wheelchair access, your house won't have to meet requirements for accessible stairs and you have some give or take, but your stairs can't be narrower than what's already in place. For example, if your stairs are 850mm just now, you have to be 850mm or over for the new stairs. If it was me I would contact somebody who sells stairs and ask them as they will deal with this every day so will be more knowledgable in this. I'm guessing a standard stair of 900 will be less expensive than a stair that's been made to fit the space. Cost will depend on if it's load baring walls that have to be moved. But I wouldn't underestimate the use of an architect/ technologist as they may see issues that we haven't picked up on, have a better idea for the use of space and how to comply with building regs, It can work out cheaper for these reasons too as sometimes we overcomplicate things we don't fully understand. They will also be able to give you a cost for the work and tell you if it's going to be worth doing it, remember the consultation won't cost you anything but will allow you to get a better understanding of what amount of work is going to be required. Where abouts in Scotland are you? I'm in Glasgow and know a few technologists in the west/ east of Scotland if you would want their contact details. You can also look on CIAT (chartered institute of architectural technology) website for technologists/ technicians in your area or RIAS ( royal incorporation of architects in Scotland) for an architect. If you have a builder in mind who will be carrying out the work then they may also have an in house design team who can help you out.

Well as you can imagine, work stopped a few weeks ago. I've managed to get some supplies delivered so I'm doing the DIY bits. I'm currently boarding out the dining room ceiling to slightly lower it and to install downlights. The wiring and boarding should be done well before my builder us allowed back. Then I have to source the kitchen all over again!

I've followed this thread over the last few days and thought about it a lot so here are my suggestions based on how I feel a family could best enjoy this house on a daily basis. UPSTAIRS Master bedoom - I would definitely go along the lines of J's and G's suggestions and centralise the bed. I wouldn't want to block off one of the lovely windows to create a dressing room in what could be an amazing sunfilled room. Blocking off would lose the wow factor and result in a basic bedroom with an odd shaped roof. You might consider dispensing with the vaulted ceiling if you are concerned the room may be too cavernous. Bedroom 4 - as original plan (no en-suite) I would use as one of the girls rooms and by the side of it create the Main bathroom - make this as spacious as you can. Even though this will be a family bathroom spend money here and make it a space where a luxury bathing experience can be enjoyed too Bedrooms 2 and 3 - make one of these a decent sized room for the other girl (no en-suite) and the remaining one a guest room with simple en-suite shower room/wc DOWNSTAIRS Study- leave smaller as original plan WC/cupboard - make this one space that is disabled compliant if possible and incorporates a cloakroom. Dispense with the shower unless you have a specific use for one. You will already have 3 other showers upstairs. Utility room - this is the most important to me. Make this a larger room using some of the allocated wc/shower room space. Let it be a laundry room and "mud room". In other words a room where the family can enter the house on dirty/wet days and remove/clean outdoor clothing. This is the room where I might consider another shower if any family member has a job or hobby whereby they need to wash off before entering the main house. A full load can be dried on it and I really only use my drier for towels now. It's already paid for itself in saved electricity! Oh and no washing draped over other radiators for airing! So that's my contribution to the mix. One thing I would say is don't try to incorporate everything on your wish list or future proof it too much resulting in what should be a modern spacious house having poky, cramped spaces. Beware the pocket doors!
