ASSISTANCE WITH UPCYCLING A PIECE OF FURNITURE

I have a large display unit with lighting that was given to me from an Art Gallery. I really need some assistance to convert it into a bookcase for my living room. I need some upcycling advice and whether anybody knows of anybody that could assist. I don't have access to a workshop. I live within the West Midlands area UK. This piece of furniture has been sitting in my hallway for well over a year now. I have carried out a search on the internet, there are not many organizations that teach/assist people with upcycling their furniture, only organizations that ask for donations, upcycle the furniture and then sell it on.

Hi Anita,

You might want to check out going to a maker space like this one:

They'll let you learn and use tools and I'm sure someone will be willing to give you some advice.

Alternatively as Isidora says - post a pic here and chances are you'll get some advice on how to tackle it. You can rent tools or even use a community resource like streetbank to request to borrow what you need from a neighbour.

I am a massive fan of upcycling, it's such a brilliant way to breath new life into an object and I also find it makes me look at the world differently. Things are rarely broken or useless for me, instead I see potential for a new design object that would bring quirkiness and curiosity into a home. My favourite piece that I have done this with is my old ukulele, which tragically broke quite spectacularly last year. The bridge holding the strings splintered from the main body of the instrument and yet I still couldn't bare to part with it. It is now serving as a quirky coat hook in my bedroom, with the tuning pegs working perfectly with the loops on coats or jackets. It's so easy to do and makes for an instant design success in any home! Jam jars are another one with endless possibilities - perhaps a small vase or new light fitting a garden could come it. Chipped a tea cup? Plant a flower in it and you've got yourself an Alice In Wonderland accessory in the works! I have started with simple things like this and am now excited to take on a larger project. My parents have a set of old brown leather suitcases they no longer want, so I have set the cogs of my brain to work on them. At the moment I am thinking that the largest of the set would make for an amazing vinyl record display unit! I'm really excited to get to work on it when I return to England.

Give it to me :D I have a business 'upcycling' furniture, I buy from auctions, charity shops, re-use centres, anywhere that sells reasonably priced items. I've also scavenged from skips, picked things out of ditches and dug through piles of woodworm infested, damp and mouldy furniture in old fashioned 'reclamation' yards. I love saving furniture, I'm the one who puts up their hand when the auctioneer says 'will anyone give me five pounds for this?' I have no pride and all donations are gratefully accepted ;)

Could work well, best thing to do is take one of the cushions with you, from the sofa that you're keeping and see if it looks ok next to the new one.. It's a really nice sofa, so hopefully it will match well. The trouble you'll have with trying to match two different sofas and a chair is that they'll all have slightly different tones, hence why a few of us said go completely different with the colour. Personally i'd go with the brown leather...........it can't clash and is easy to match a change of wallpaper or carpet as it's a timeless classic. Leather lasts infinitely longer than fabric and so you don't need to keep changing sofas when you change colour schemes. My daughter rues the day that she bought a fabric sofa with 2 kids! - I did try and tell her, but you know what kids are like.

So lovely that you wish to restore your grandads furniture. It’s amazing how good dark painted furniture can look. I think painting it charcoal grey, black, navy or dark green will fit in nicely. Painting furniture isn’t difficult, but it must be done properly. So a light sand, wipe down and then paint on 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of top coat such as eggshell or Satinwood. It is crucial to let each layer dry thoroughly and cure before applying the next. Best to leave days between coats rather than hours. You could add a seat pad to the chair. Dunelm sell them or Etsy have a huge range. Here’s some painted furniture to give you an idea of how it could look.

Hi Anita

One of the greatest things about Upcycling is that it allows you to experiment!
The best advice we've been given by Rustoleum (Who produce an upcycling specific chalky finish paint - more on that later) is to experiment on a small piece of furniture first, like a footstool or small bedside table. Play around with paint samples and see how you can give it that "battered" look that so many people desire these days (a light roughening up with a bit of sandpaper works well)

As for the paint itself - we'd strongly recommend you have a look at Rustoleum's Chalky Finish line and best of all, you can call us up (during office hours) to ask for advice and even order some samples over the phone!
