Thanks so much everyone - this has been great. Sorry for the lack of response - been flat out!!!! It must be hard for you American guys to work on such old English designs.... The ideas have gradually culminated into what really would look good on the house. Ourfarmhouse - these are absolutely great ideas, and thanks Everything Beautiful for getting the jist and putting the ideas onto the house image - nothing like seeing an actual design on your own home. We've got an architech working on it, and he's keen on the iron-wrought idea... but we're not sure. Basically toss-up with this and Everything Beautiful's design (2 above). Going with a four-pannel door, but would like to incorporate some glass somewhere! Possibly a panel above with the house name engraved on it?? Victoria - absolutely right...! We don't need to sit outside with the weather.......... say no more! Just wanting something to cover yourself while you're unlocking the door. We've also done a tour of the local areas, and found a couple of porches - amazing what you find right on your doorstep! Will attach pics shortly...

Hi John, We would always suggest external insulation rather than internal insulation, where you have the option, because as John Botham states there is a real risk of interstitial condensation, and potential mould and damage to the structure. If you do need to do it internally be careful not to add to much and ensure it is fitted carefully without gaps and with a good vapour barrier - especially around electric sockets etc. if you use a product such as Kingspan. It is also vital that you return the insulation in around the windows, this makes significant differences to overall performance and the risk of condensation and mould at this point, though this insulation can be thinner. We often recommend a breathable insulation such as Pavadentro when internal insulation is required, as this allows the moisture to come in and out of the wall. Careful detailing at internal wall junctions, floors and roof are also needed, along with good airtightness sealing, while you are doing it. Putting a price on external insulation is difficult as it depends on many factors, such as needing to move down pipes, extending eaves etc, along with thickness and type of insulation. A good render, installed correctly should last many years without the need for any maintenance and can perform to a much higher standard than internal. Good evening, I was looking around the same before building my 6m x 5m garden shed/ man cave. Is we the anyone who has designed a 6x5m garden our building before? I was hoping to design it for part storage for fishing gear and tools, say 1/5 of the layout and the 4/5 a bar, man cave with a toilet, pool table, dart board and seating area with tv etc. Effectively creating another room from the house? Is there any design software I could try and design this or would anyone fancy having ago? I've drawn up a sketch of the proposed layout attached below. After reading through the regulations if we built the shed within the 1m boundary i believe the following would comply PD and BD. the flat roof would be no higher than 2.5m sloping backwards (roof material from either tile or rubber, total height of shed will be no higher than 2.5m) the walls would be double skin block and mortar, rendered (non-combustible) (Question - could we clad the block it in cedar wood, is this classed as non-combustible?) the total shed area will be less than 30m2 and cover less than half of the total area of the back garden. Ive attached a brief design layout of how the shed would be built. Any ideas or help or potential entail designs would be great! kind regards, Ashley.

Orangery / flat roof external material - what's best?

I am building an orangery in the next few months. It measures 8.8m x 3.7m with a central glass roof lantern and a perimeter ceiling of approx 0.7m in width. I am at the stage of selecting the external roofing material that will lie on top of the perimeter ceiling area. I have been looking at a variety of materials, from plastic, rubber to metal, and there seem to be pros and cons with each. Would be very interested and grateful to hear from orangery (or flat roof building) owners or experts of their experiences and recommendations. The orangery is south facing so will endure direct sun and heat. Thank you.
