Wood burning stove advice

Hello wise one's,

We have just (this week) had a wood burner put into our home and for the most part we are really happy with it.

The hearth however has been oiled (now looks shiny black) and i much preferred the matt grey colour that it was before he oiled it (to match the surround) Can anything be done about this to make it matt grey again?

Also the join in the slate hearth looks quite apparent. Can we do anything about this? I feel that this may be less apparent when the slate was matt grey.

You could try using a drop of fairy liquid in warm water with a brillo pad to remove the oil. If that doesn't work upgrade to white spirit which should cut through it - just wear gloves, open a window and make sure its throughly washed off after.

Funnily enough I applied some purposely formulated slate oil to our honed slate hearth because I preferred the darker colour and it looked awful - really streaky and uneven. I ended up using white spirit and a brillo to remove it all. On the advice of the internet I then used WD40 which is a much lighter oil which worked perfectly and can be topped up easily.

Thanks Lauren,

I have it a going over with fairy and it has gone matt instead of shiny which is great. It is still black rather than charcoal colour but I'm much happier with it. Thanks again

Hi Greg, I think mixing contemporary styling with original features works wonderfully. My personal favourite wood burners are the morso stoves (for example the s50). Of course you need to choose one that meets your heating requirements, but the supplier should be able to help with that. If that one (that has the right output) doesn't legally fit in the existing opening, then you have a problem. You could remove the existing fire surround and enlarge the opening, with maybe a contemporary floating shelf above the new opening, or you could choose a smaller stove and then provide supplementary heating through other means. Is there central heating already in the building? If so then a discrete flush panel radiator should be easy to locate somewhere out of the way. Alternatively you could put in an industrial style radiator below the windows (where they are normally most needed): http://www.bisque.co.uk/products/general-radiators/flow-form If you don't have central heating, you could use a black-body infra-red radiator to top up the heating, which is run on electrics, is energy efficient and has other health benefits. The stove can't put it where the tv is now because is difficult to place the chimney in that place of the house. i have in my mind something like the sketche below, but i dont know how possible is to put the tv near the stove (about 60cm)

The brickwork for the current TV stand is tied into the chimney, removing it would need some remedial work which will be noticeable. The salvaged bricks from removing the TV stand can be used to replace the side bricks in the chimney and to tie them back in. Once the TV cabinet is removed I doubt there would be neat brickwork behind it. It would really need the alcoves plasterboarding and skimming then which seems a shame. Brickwork can be saved on the chimney if fitting an inset stove into the existing builders opening. If wanting to open it up the only way would be to cut down the bond in the bricks and open it up. There would be a fair bit of work in it to make it look neat and finished. Without seeing it though it is hard to give 100% accurate advice.

Hi Angela,

The slate dressing will eventually evaporate, it will take some time but it will eventually go. As for the join between the two pieces of slate, you could try using some black bathroom grout and see if that gets you closer to the slate colour.

Thanks Rich, i will put black bathroom grout on my shopping list and get my husband to give it a bash!
