How do you use your Garden in the Winter Months?

Gardens are not just for summer...

Throughout Autumn and Winter gardens take on a different but very beautiful character.

From the fragrance of winter plants to bright red Cornus stems, to the traditional winter berries like Holly that we associate especially with Christmas, gardens are still places to enjoy.

From bonfire entertaining to walking out on a crisp winter morning with a fresh cup of coffee - we love this stage in a garden's life.

Bonfires are the best! (especially when there are marshmallows involved!) I think the garden can be really cosy in winter - as long as you are equipped with plenty of blankets or a lovely warming patio heater. When you spot the first robin then you know Christmas is coming!

Living in London, I only have balcony with potted plants. While I wish I took more care of it, I cant bring myself to do anything in the cold! Maybe this discussion will give me the push I needed to be a bit more responsible with it.....

I helped my Dad build a fire pit in his garden, he made wooden seats to sit around the metal fire pit with old stone columns for extra seating (unfortunately you can't see the actual fire-pit as behind the stone bench). Lots of stories and fun are had around it until deep into the night. If you have the space it is a great addition to put in! Shannon

Alas the armandii is toxic to dogs (think I might have one at the front, eek) However I did find 6 others that are evergreen and flower in winter which would be fab to brighten up the drab season. Not sure how fast growing they are though

Weekly? Oh, how I wish it were only weekly. I'm out there nearly every day culling the three-cornered leek that has reappeared as a thick blanket despite me culling it in the first spring I was here, in my new house, then finding it had reappeared hugely aggressively last year and now, in my third spring, it's even thicker and even more widespread - and is now not only in the flower beds but also in the lawn, thick along the edge, scattered within it. Front and back. It takes about two hours to clear about a square yard - digging under the bulbs; banging off the (very good, I've been told) soil in which there are always several earthworms which I need to hang on to (obviously); then picking out the tiniest bulbs left behind. I don't think I can ever finish it this year - as happened last year - which means the problem will go on for decades. I don't really have the time (I need to work, I need a life beyond digging and clearing). The only solution I can think of is to bring in help but my budget won't allow that. I value having lawn so paving it over isn't an option. I will have less planting space, which will eventually mean less weeding, but it's not something I can do right now - I've too much to do to bring the indoors up to date. I disagree with Jo DP. The previous owners had a keep it wild policy and now I have this big problem with a massively invasive plant. And, yes, I have tried using it in recipes - it really isn't worth the effort of keeping it under control (to have a limited supply). I'm an experienced and adventurous cook and three-cornered leek is an overrated ingredient, even though it's free and in my garden.

Didn't realise the "voting" was one thing only - might explain why "baking" rates so highly as I don't doubt that others went for that first, thinking they could "vote" for others afterwards! Ddddduuuuuhhhhhh. Anyway, we live in the kitchen as it's always warm thanks to an approx. 60-year old solid fuel AgA (runs on anthracite). We sleep in the bedroom, ablute in either the bathroom or shower-room and don't retire to the drawing room until we've lit the multi-fuel stove in there and then enjoy a pre-dinner drink and after dinner TV before going to bed. It may sound a little stuffy or old-fashioned, but that's just too bad. We like it. Oh and I nearly forgot: the dining room is for when we entertain to dinner/lunch only and the study is for.... you guessed it: studying (well, storing books, desktop PC, and as a 3rd spare bedroom if truth be told).
