Can you please tell me where the marble worktop was sourced and/or the colour?

Hi. It is a granite for sure not a marble. And it looks Indian. It could be "Ivory Fantasy" or it could be a number of other granites from that part of the world.

We think it could be colonial gold granite 30mm or ivory fantasy.

Hi there, White marble looks gorgeous as a worktop but is quite porous and prone to staining. All natural stone worktops will need to be sealed, but marble does require more maintenance and care than other types of worktop. Alternatives you could look at are combining a white composite worktop with a white marble splashback that runs up to the underside of your wall-mounted cupboards. I've attached a couple of images to illustrate what this could be like. Granites can be really striking, but there doesn't tend to be the same colour range of white-grey as you find with marbles. You might also consider using a white quartzite, which is a natural material. Although quartzites tend to be a little softer than granites, I've attached an image of a couple which have a hardness comparable to some granites - best if you were to go with a 30mm thick worktop if using them though. The one with the larger crystals is called Iceberg White, and one with the smaller crystals that run in bands is called White Nestos. Hope that is of some help! Best of luck with your project.

As others have suggested, one option is to go with a marble effect laminate for now and then replace with the real deal in future. You won't lose out any significant amount, and there are some stunningly good marble effect laminates out there at the moment - as mentioned, the German kitchen suppliers often have good ones and Omega Kitchens (English Rose, Charles Rennie MacKintosh) have some extremely good thin profile (22mm), square edged surfaces in marble finishes. Another excellent "half way house" is a product called Minerva - more info can be found here. It is a fantastic product akin to Corian, but with the advantage than any competent kitchen fitter can install it himself with normal laminate fitting tools - no expensive templating, offsite machining and professional installing to worry about. They offer moulded in sinks in stainless or white, upstands & splashbacks and the material is repairable. While more expensive than laminates, it comes in well under an equivalent quartz or stone product. They have a really good Carrara finish as well as an incredibly subtle white sparkle finish (think classy delicate shimmer!) and some other grey and brown tones. We're selling a lot more of this than Corian & Silestone now - and for good reason. Feel free to get in touch with me if you want more info or some indicative pricing.

Hi, I have worked as a mason with marble for 13 years now. You need to try and remove the everyday stuff that has become attached to the surface. Sealing the marble again and again is not advisable before cleaning the surface properly with a solvent based product. You are just creating an impossible barrier to clean through. You need to remove the sealant before trying to remove the stains. Solvent based strippers, designed for natural stone are available to us in the industry, however I am not sure you, as a consumer can purchase them. We buy these chemicals direct form Italy from our stone suppliers. You could however try acetone, just a clean cloth and generous amounts of acetone, a lot of hard cleaning, rubbing off. This should shift some of the greasy residue, and it will take the sealant off, allowing you to really get at the stains. For the rings marks - You can also try Astonish Cream cleaner it come so in the yellow bottle, NOT THE PASTE IT IS TOO ABRASIVE AND WILL SCRATCH THE SURFACE. First wet the marble lightly, add astonish, a decent amount and work in to a lather on the face of the areas that are marked, use a brillo pad on the soft green side, and ten, fifteen minutes, or until you are knackered!! Really clean and work the area. Remove the excess water and cream cleaner with a squeegee if you have one or just lots and lots of fresh paper towels. Continue to wipe the area with clean paper cloth until it is restored to the rest. After this then seal again, wait a good half an hour and then buff off. Failing all of that, your surface will need to be re-honed in situ by a skilled mason who will sand over the face. This will still not remove and stains that are more than surface deep. How old are is the marble just out of interest? And do you have any pictures i could see of the staining?

Hi again, It has been a while but we now have samples of everything. The white marble top will be on the island which is the grey colour, with an oak end-grain butchers block. The dark granite will be on the white units around the perimeter and the floor will be engineered oak parquet laid in a herringbone pattern. In the photo the granite looks a bit darker than in real life. Both worktops will be matt finished between a honed and polished finish. We are not completely decided on the walls yet and I am considering timeless or purbeck stone/Johnston’s copy of purbeck stone as the budget is getting tight towards the end of our project! The room is north, north east facing and I would prefer to keep it slightly warmer toned, than too cool. We will decide on the splashback in the new year. I originally wanted antique mirror effect but it might be too much with all the different surfaces. The other alternatives I am considering are marble metro-style tiles or plain glass. If you have any thoughts I would be pleased to hear them. Thanks again for your help.
