POLL: Tinsel - yes or no?

Tinsel often only gets one chance in the year to make an appearance and that's Christmas time! Glittery and festive, it's a popular decorative choice, but for some it's more a cause for concern than celebration.

So we're asking you this - does tinsel get a yes or a no from you?

I loved tinsel as a kid and it was put on the tree on the walls on the ceiling. Now, not so much but it does bring back memories of childhood Christmas and a tear to my eye for my Mum (first Christmas without her).

I love it. But I use it in the background - I put it on first, tucking it back a bit, then hang the decorations in front of it. It adds sparkle without dominating.

We have a double bed but it's a couple of single divans zipped together, this does cut down on movement being felt when the person your sleeping with turns over... additionally we have separate duvets which is fantastic! My husband likes to be tucked in and have the covers right up to his ears and I can't bear either! In the winter though I hate that wind tunnel down my back so, for us, we want to share a big bed but not a duvet!

My husband trusts me and prefers I make all those decisions. That said I always ask his opinion on large pieces. If I left it all to him he would lose interest before finishing! Design is so not his thing. But then I'm not interested in documentaries on outer space or Lego.... Best we stick to our own interests I think! ;)

Yes, absolutely. It's great to add small changes in your home, even if it is changing the flowers in the room to daffodils for the spring time or putting a pop of colour with cushions for the sofa, a small change can make the difference in any room. Decorating for the seasonal festive i.e. Halloween or Christmas is also a big part of showing your unique style in how you decorate.

Yes but I only use silver and pale gold - gives a subtle sparkle like icy pine needles. The picture above shows possibly one of the worst examples of tinsel use in my opinion (weird colour and only one randomly strewn length of it). I suspect a bias on the pollster's behalf.

Hi angelboyman, so sorry about your mum. I know what you mean about childhood memories. I have very vivid memories of tinsel, glitter and the rattle of the gold spray can. All tacky to us as adults but the stuff of magic for children. Have a lovely Xmas.

I always get a thick tree that has mysterious dark caverns. The tinsel gets tucked right in the middle to catch the light and be a very subtle twinkle.

If you buy a lovely real tree for Xmas now, what will it look like by December 25th? I didn't realise they could last that long. Last year (apologies in advance for this) we kept finding little spiders everywhere around Xmas and couldn't work out where they were coming from. The lovely tree we had purchased from a local field was infested with spiders and ants!! We didn't bother waiting for the Epiphany to take it down.

I voted no to tinsel, but having said that the photo is remarkably like ours ends up looking every year! A few toy ornaments and kid made stuff from years gone by (plus the latest offering), the few remaining unbroken baubles, and one string of tinsel running through the whole thing! I like to think of it as having 'rustic charm'

Tinsel used to be heavy and hang straight in the 1950s. It had lead in it. That was banned in 1972.
THE POPULAR VERSION OF THE 20TH CENTURY CONTAINED LEAD UNTIL 1972

As you can see in a newspaper article from November 1972, the FDA deemed tinsel an "unnessary risk to children with symptoms of lead poisoning" in August 1971. Manufacturers had switched to lead foil in the 20th century for tarnish-proof sparkle and weight. However, it was off the shelves by Christmas 1972. Today, the stuff is made from far lighter plastic or mylar, if you're wondering why it hardly hangs like it used to.

The stuff these days gets full of static, and gets stuck on clothing and the family pet(s). I believe individual tinsel strands are hazardous to the health of pets if it is swallowed when the pet is trying to clean the clingy stuff off the fur. The Houzz photo above shows tinsel garland, not tinsel strands. I don't use tinsel or tinsel garland in my decorating these days.
