Cleaning Wooden Flooring

I've just had engineered oak wooden flooring installed and would love to hear your recommendation for cleaning wooden flooring, ie the equipment and products you would recommend. Thanks so much in advance.

Hi there, we advise sweeping regularly with a soft bristled broom to remove any dust and rogue bits of grit on the floor. You can also vacuum a wood floor - ideally with a soft brush attachment to avoid scratching. As for mopping, take care as moisture can damage a wood floor. Always use a well-wrung mop and remove excess liquid immediately. And be sure to clean up any spills as soon as possible.

This is a question i get asked all the time. We sell miles of Wood Effect Porcelain Tiles for anything from a small cloakroom floor to huge living spaces. Like someone said Porcelain is Cold to touch where as the real thing, not as much. Most of the Builds we supply it to are installing Water underfloor heating throughout the areas its being fixed to so you avoid this problem. With hundreds of factories around the globe all giving it their best shot there really are some true stunners that not only fool the eye but the touch too. The positives of Porcelain really outweigh the negatives, no warping, no swelling, no staining or scratching. We once had a customer that replaced her traditional wood with porcelain because it was so much easy to look after and she didn't need to worry about her cleaner using the wrong product and staining it. Be careful with Amtico as they are not all UV protected and can fade. If considering wood you could get unfinished wood installed. Companies such as Wood Floor Accessories are a great supplier. Having it finished on site means a finish can be picked that works for your home. Each home has variables such as pets, different traffic and the owners desire to maintain the flooring or aversion to maintenance. Having wood finished on site has advantages. You can pick the highest quality product that works for your budget. The range of finishes available is quite wide. A professional company will try to understand your home and recommend the appropriate finish. They will also understand how easily the finish was can be renovated in the future. Amtico is an extremely robust product but being plastic, is just plastic flooring. It has its place, as does wood. In areas that have plenty of light surfaces, scratches show very easily on Amtico, Karndean etc. The manufacturers push a polishing maintenance product on consumers. However, this needs to be stripped and reapplied on a regular basis.

There is a limit to what you can do for them, providing they are a real wood veneer used on the top (and their made as a plywood / laminated style plank) you could probably sand or plain them down a bit but nothing is really going to stop the warping now. Sealing them after would help prevent it getting further in. could you not remove them and go back to the original floor?

Ah great Tina, you'll find it easy to spot repair your oiled floor if it does gain some scratches with wear. Just bear in mind that you might need to re-oil your floor periodically to ensure the surface finish remains protective.
