Help needed to design downstairs space

After 5 months and working out I can't afford an extension, I need some help planning a kitchen, dining space and lounge in the existing space I have. I'd like to keep the patio doors and put in a downstairs loo too but that is a tall order. Does anyone know of a space planner / designer / architect in the Bristol area who could help me?

Hi Becky,
I have good experiences with OnePlan. She's not in your area I think, but that doesn't matter, for there is the magic of internet ;-) She's in the U.K. and I'm in the Netherlands and it worked perfectly. Check out her pro page here on Houzz.

Hello folks! I haven't disappeared, just had whooping cough (yes, seriously!) with a garnish of gastric flu and torn muscles from coughing fits. So that has severely impeded our efforts (hubby's had it too, and it lasts around 3mths so we're not out of the woods yet!) with our new house (which I now describe as semi-derelict before we bought it) and so had no time/mental energy to properly get updated on what's been happening with you guys. Truth be told, I've started reading a few times & either got interrupted (mummy-ness) or fallen asleep, without finishing. I've missed this, but u guys, esp Monica & RoRo have been in my thoughts. Where to start?! I think I've taken in all that's happened in this thread since I went AWOL but might have missed some finer points. Monica, I'm so sorry to hear what u'v been through, with the RTA & the cowboy tiling / wallpapering on top! (& work always picks worst times to intensify - I just started on a Task Force this week, when shd really still be on sick leave). I mean, a marker?! Seriously?! Isn't it common knowledge / common sense to use a lightly applied pencil? Sounds like u r doing best thing by looking at it as a learning experience. Still, he deserves an honest review somewhere. Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'll look at the lounge link when I've finished this post. BTW I LOVE your artwork. Vivacious, bright and deep - is there an insight there? ;-) And RoRo, wow you've got a lot on your plate! We've been so frustrated with being held back on our projects by health, but u have taken on a bigger scale of project altogether, sounds like it's verging on municipal! U guys inspire me. :-) Thinking of starting a thread on our living room, it's the most 'civilised' room of the house so far, but I didn't take the north-facing position into account when I decided on a colour scheme of turquoise, grey and lime. (Doh!) So far I've made some headway on a concept I'm excited by, but it needs some tweaking so it doesn't feel 'cold' with the blue tone of the natural light. Are you up for sharing some of your thoughts on this??? Hope so. :-)

Yes see what you mean. Presuming you have done up the kitchen already as you could make a bigger kitchen & add a utility area & use this space as the dining area. Otherwise if you are a book lover you could shelve the walls & then have a desk etc as a library/study/work area. Or you could add some wooden fold back doors & house a second tv, sofa etc in there as a sort of snug room.

Have attached your modified plan. I took down the wall between the kitchen and the study / playroom to give you a big Kitchen / diner. Reclaimed some of the lounge for a smaller playroom. You don't need a vast second lounge as you already have a sitting room. It made the Kitchen / Diner a much more useable space. ( All subject to load bearing walls / planning etc ) You may want to move the current door to the kitchen from the middle to one end, to give yourself the best chance of a good run of kitchen units!

Hi Liam, when you start your home making journey, there are steps to follow; big steps and little ones in between. Getting ahead of yourself is risky and potentially costly. Houzz is an amazing platform and you can get some incredible, valuable advise here, but in order to solve the problems you need to ask the right questions. If you focus too early on what the solution is without properly identifying main problems you will probably end up with a bad design. Take your time with identifying core issues. List the problems that need solving. Is your space practical, is it functional, is it light, dark, warm, cold, too big, too small, too messy, too busy? Is it connecting or is it isolating. Is it interacting, is it supportive of your life. How do you want your house to serve you? Is your house supportive of your and your family lifestyle? What user experience are you trying to achieve? It is the function of the space that will make your design successful. At the moment your possibilities are endless.
