Need help with my Hallway and Landing ...
Comments (18)After living with beige neutrals for about 10 years I revamped my stairs and hallway early this year with lavender walls and the brightest white gloss I could find. Mine is not the biggest space so I took out the pendant light and had recessed spot lights installed. Finished off with a silver grey carpet, although I confess this went completely against everything my friends told me....."dark carpet on stairs!". It looks fab, light and clean, although I am now a strictly no shoes upstairs freak. The floor downstairs is a parquet type flooring in a pale oak colour. I have dark oak in the kitchen and am pleased that I went with the paler oak for the hallway. I finished it off with a white blind at the top of the stairs where the only window is and the space which doubles up as an office. The first picture is taken at night with the spots on and it shines different in the daylight. Overall, I was sceptical when the first coat of paint went on but now I'm quite liking the whole 'purple' effect....See MoreHELP PLEASE!! Landing, stairs, hallway decorating ideas
Comments (17)I have a hall way very similar to yours, when we moved in it was painted white. I presume the previous owner wanted to improve light levels. It had the reverse effect! It made the space seem gloomier which may be related to the front of the house being north facing, what direction does your house face as this may influence paint choices. I love colour but go neutral in a space like a hall way as it links all the rooms in the house and in Victorian houses is very difficult to decorate, ceiling heights etc. We used Farrow and Balls London stone as it remained a true neutral,,many other beige/greige had pink/ purple tones which showed in artificial light. I agree with the other comments about stripping the doors particularly if you do decide on white, it will provide contrast and warmth. You could paint a darker colour beneath the dado rail. I would suggest careful placement of mirrors to maximise/ steal light from other rooms. Also pictures with glass bring light to the area too. You could mount pictures on the stair case in line with the treads. I agree with the earlier comment about mounts and frames. I would go for a runner to show off your lovely stair case. Does the door to your kitchen/diner have a glass panel (s) in it, if not I would suggest adding one or two depending on the type of original door you have that will pull light in from that room. Good lighting will help too, it all depends on your personal preference, you could have pendants downstairs and spotlights upstairs. Good luck with it and hope you enjoy the process...See MoreHelp with hall/stairs/landing
Comments (4)I'd go for option B. I think you need some hint of another colour, but I can understand your dislike of coloured walls and wallpaper (you're not alone in the wallpaper loathing!) Other than a greig colour, have you though of something a bit like F&B Dimity? which will give you the contrast between your white woodwork and the walls, whilst still keeping it pale and neutral, but adding a bit of warmth to counter of the lack of natural light. I think it will also compliment your new travertine...See MorePlease help me pick a colour for my hall, stairs & landing
Comments (15)Well what a coincident! Visited a friend yesterday who is having her hallway, stairs and landing painted on Monday and wanted my advice (!). She has chosen a Karndean style herringbone floor for her hall and a soft check stair carpet in a warm caramel colour. Staircase is oak and glass. Not much natural light in the hall. We looked through loads of paint charts but she didn’t want the expense of F&B or Little G. Then we both felt Dulux Caramel Latte or Caramel Blush would look good. She later bought some matchpots and loves both shades, so she’s having the Latte on one wall and the Blush on the rest. They are lovely warm tones with very appropriate names!...See MoreHelen Elliott
