Carpet spot cleaning solutions

My much loved wee cat enjoys stuffing her face and chucking up on the cream carpet. I don't like using strong chemicals which I'm allergic to and which I worry might poison her. Anyone know a good safe alternative?

I use hair shampoo (as long as it's clear liquid!) I found this out when my friend placed a mug of tea on the floor for me without saying so (I know!) and I knocked it over and spilt it all over her cream carpet. No carpet cleaner so grabbed clear hair shampoo and it was amazing. No stain at all phew!

The idea the cat is often sick isn't great but...

Water water water water water.... never ever soap.

Soap is made solely to attract dirt. So the moment you add soap of any sort to a carpet you will forever make the dust be attracted to the carpet

@Emmaline. ..just to assure you that whoever mentioned fuzzy toilet seats mistated this. No, they are not actually put on the SEAT. These are not so popular, I don't think, as they were 30 years ago but what they are is a matching rug toilet LID cover. I remember there used to be tank covers but my memory is vague on that. The tank thing might have been the tank LID also. In old days, bathroom sets had the bath mat, the mat with a cut out to allow it to fit around the toilet on the floor, the seat LID cover. They got picked up and washed regularly with the bath mat. I'm not sure if that wasn't better than stepping in male drippings. Better? Worse? We had no males in our household so it was nice to keep feet warm up in winter. My mom was a really good housekeeper so...anyway that was a looong time ago and it was the lid, not the seat itself. I could see how that would be so wrong on every level.

I have a hallway with little natural light and I have used Farrow and Ball Skimming Stone which is a warm off white/grey. It has enough depth to make the woodwork stand out but keeps it nice and light so it doesn't feel oppressive. Mirrors do help too and we put subtle frosted glass recessed spots in the ceiling corners too which creates a more natural light pattern on a dull day x

The 'sock fairy' does her rounds when the children are in bed, and quietly puts them in the washing machine. The same for the dishes in the dishwasher. Then, the timers kick in at wake up time. It is lovely to think that the machines are doing all the work and I haven't even got up yet! Beds made and we're off to do life! No time for cleaning. We hire the person who does the floors windows and the boring stuff, and I make a point of inviting someone once a month when the whole family pitches in and we all go mad and make the house extra beautiful with flowers and such. We're all pretty neat and clean up and tidy as we go, so we don't really live in mess- but I'm not a slave to the Neatnik.

Thank you so much for all your comments, really kind of you. Read Interiors will take your advice and get a wall mounted headboard, will start calling upholsterers tomorrow to get prices. Daisy, yes I do have a vax from the last house and the newer models are much better than the previous ones in terms of drying times. Vicki thanks for the name of the stretch valance as I couldn't find them on Google apart from on House of Fraser but they have limited colours and were pretty pricey at £100 or so! Angm, funnily enough I had this conversation with the carpet man as when I lifted the 50 year old carpet I noticed there was paper down and he explained that was why. He said it was also a good idea to tape any joins in underlay as well as the carpet but said a lot of fitters don't do this. Forzaitalia and Sam appreciate the insights and very interesting given your experiences Corbridge Interior design interesting point re rug and sizing I am still torn!!!! But I am probably moving towards carpets. I think the pics make the floor look better than it is! Noise wouldn't be a problem as we are in a bungalow, which is why I am concerned about the kids walking into their rooms on carpet having forgotten to take their shoes off! If it was upstairs I would definitely go with carpet! Aargh decisions, decisions!

I have same problem with the dog. We use bicarbonate soda in a paste with water. Works a treat.

I did hear to use only water also 're-decorate' but this was Yorkshire tea we were dealing with hahaha
