Should I paint these wardrobes?

Hello,

I'm renovating a bedroom in my 1930's house and have just bought these dated wardrobes as they fit my alcoves perfectly and were much cheaper than building fitted wardrobes. I'm not great with colour however, so would appreciate any suggestions on what colour to paint them. They are over 7ft tall so quite imposing but partly mirrored. It's a darkish west facing room and I'd like something soothing. My husband prefers them as they are (or will be when assembled) Thanks very much!

I think it depends on what else you are doing in the room.
If you want a mid tone colour on the wall then I think they might work as they are.
If you choose a pale soft colour for the walls I would paint these wardrobes and fire surround a similar colour for a cohesive look.
Personally I would paint the walls a deep colour and then paint the furniture and woodwork a soft white, add white bedding and pictures and light fittings. When you are finished there won't be much dark wall colour showing but what is visible will frame the window and furniture making it stand out.

As said before, you will need a bonding primer. Two I know of are zinsser bullseye 123 primer and Owatrol ESP (easy surface primer). Both of these (and there might be other brands as well) can be used without sanding the surface first but remember to sugar soap them first to remove residues. Haven't used the zinsser but heard a lot of good things about it. ESP is expensive but goes a long way, basically it creates a film which etches into the surface beneath it. Two or three top coats of chosen paint finish, job done. I've used ESP on veneer and it does bond really well but can't speak for it's longevity, paint chipping, knocks etc. might be as well to use a multi purpose primer after the bonding primer and then the top coats. Use a foam gloss roller for a nice even finish. This sounds a bit confusing so steps are: 1. Sugar soap surface 2. Wipe off sugar soap 3. Bonding primer, follow instructions 4. Multi use primer or top coat 5. 2-3 layers of top coat. Alternatively you could you use Annie Sloan chalk paint which also doesn't require sanding first and use a clear wax or lacquer to finish.

I quite liked option 1 as well but i don't liek the idea of seeing the back of the wardrobe and makes the room feel alot smaller. Option 3 works the best with staggered depth units.

If you want to preserve that look you could varnish the wall. I don’t think anyone else will see the charm you are seeing though - I think most peoples walls look like this when they strip wall paper and take down other fixtures such as shelves that leave drill holes. Anyone else would fill the holes and paint over it to give a flat and clean looking finish.

hi Jamie, I see the problem you have with the doors opening. if you mark the 18- 20mm space allowing the doors to open you can have the skirting against the mdf and mitre it to finish at the door line. I also think the cupboard will look nice with a framed architraves which would solve the problem completely. hope the options help!! best Rowland
