colour advice for period north facing room

I've seen some great advice to people's dilemmas so hope you can help with this. I have a period property in apartments with large north facing windows to the living rooms. its in a town and I'm going to rent it out and what it to feel luxurious and architectural rather than old traditional. I'm thinking a dark laminate like walnut for the floor, a dark grey like Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray for all walls and white for woodwork and ceilings to make them pop. the problem is will tjis work or feel too cold? i need help with the details; matt or sheen, what white, satin or gloss. any combinations (grey or otherwise) that work for this room would really be appreciated.

Your plan sounds nice as the walnut will warm up the grey..... However I wonder if carpet is a better option for sound insulation and for cleaning plus it is easier to add wood furniture. You could choose a stripe or tartan for a more lux look. You might also consider if you want to add some white walls in the parts of the building with lower ceilings and less windows.
I might also consider pale grey ceilings to help emphasize ornate white coving.
You should paint the walls, ceiling and coving with a flat emulsion.
Woodwork should be an eggshell- I think you get the paint your decorator wants to paint with.
If you intend to rent them furnished as a serviced apartment I think that you will need to add more colours to make them feel more homely but otherwise you are planning a smart blank canvass

wow, what gorgeous architecture!

I am a great fan of grey and have used it successfully in a less grand north facing room.

The trick to remember is that grey is a very chameleon colour and will change with natural light and with artificial lights, so I would advise that you paint some swatches on lining paper - white tac them up on all the walls and view them at different times of day and in different lights.

Grey and white will look stunning but I would introduce some warmth through soft furnishings - replacing the blinds with something in a bold colourful stripe would bring in another tone.

Wood flooring is always a winner and cleaner and more hygienic that carpet.

White Tie would be a great solution - it is a fresh & a warm off white with yellow tones which will really help in a North facing room. I would avoid Joa's white as it has quite a pink tone. Why not also put a very large mirror on the back wall - this will help bounce more light around. If you want to add some interest, paint the door & wall around it in a deeper colour.

Hi Emma. For a long narrow room (relatively speaking as it isn't narrow!), you could paint the 2 short walls the dark colour as this will "correct" the room's proportions rather than paint the long wall as it will accentuate the length. Alternatively you'd normally paint the fireplace wall to highlight the feature. I think as you've got doors it should break it up a bit but I'd do the doors in the same colour. I would probably go for something a bit richer than pitch blue, like Hague blue. I know whose room that is you've pictured in the 2nd pic so will try and find the colour but am sure it was a valspar paint! You could also try downpipe which works well in a north facing room. I'd probably put these with warm whites/neutrals rather than grey. Elephants breath can work really well in a north facing room but can also just look grey and agree with littlesongs comments! You could also go dark on all walls and layer the lighting, add mirrors etc. Or if you decide light then people can make colour suggestions for that :)

Hi Debbie. I hope it's all going well so far for you! You have some great ideas. When north light is involved I would stay clear of whites with green or blue undertones or infant, those colours. You want to enhance the warm. Try a white with a red or yellow undertone. This will easily pair with yellow so great on the rug. I would choose this white first and then when a test patch is up (or you have one on paper) I would look at a suitable green to work with it. For adding fun and to break up the block colour I would add a mural/sticker to the wall (someone like ink vinyl) they are reasonable priced and very easy not only to put on, but more importantly, to remove in a few years without leaving a mark as tastes change! :) You have a great start to the space and I look forward to seeing your ideas come together. thanks for the advice. I'm stuck on choosing whites. would brilliant white work in a scheme likr this or look to harsh? I forgot to mention this I'd in ireland and north facing so the light is generally poor.

I just finished to redecorate my west facing living room. I used Pale Hound by Farrow&Ball on my walls. It looks warm and will be perfect for north facing room. I used Laura Ashley Cotton White water based matt paint. It is not as harsh as brilliant white. The room looks gorgeous!

hi,

I would go with a matt white, something a bit softer than brilliant white which could actually look rather dated in your space.

A fresh white will automatically contrast with the grey walls, so will give the light effect you are after.

beautiful place, my advice is to use matt emulsion, reduce sheen, if you want a more modern feeling paint everything the same color wood included and than play with furniture and accessories color. I would feature wall that fireplace use a different color on it, maybe add lights at either sides.
if you d like a more country classic do as you said split colors wall dark gray (please consider blue gray as well) and white for wood (or egg shell beige). I m attaching a north facing room picture we ve just completed
