Chimney and alcoves dilemma
I'm thinking of doing the chimney in a loud but warm paper. The other walls are a lighter coloured paper but I don't know what to do to the alcoves??
do I paper them the same as the chimney?
paint them a lighter shade (the inside and the underneath bit)
or paper inside the alcoves with the feature paper and paint the chimney a lighter colour instead? I'm totally stuck and open to suggestions.

Comments (10)Hello Shelly, I rather think the peaty, mushroom, blackish browns of the colour chart could look really nice.. Or deeper blacker blues.. With the alcove or chimney dilemma.. Contrary to what F&B have said.... I'd personally paint the chimney breast the darker colour.. It will not only highlight the fire and the mirror but draw the eye to it... The recesses then stay the lighter colour thus giving the room an idea of space. Eyes are drawn to darker bolder colours.. Darker recesses bring it all forward to the eye and then create the idea of less space if the majority is staying a lighter colour.. If you are working to a dark scheme then I would suggest all dark or the reverse of what I have said, so light chimney breast in a dark room.. Comments (17)I'd build the whole thing back out as one unit with even shelf sizes both sides. 8cm is not wide enough to put anything on anyway. So if you re-build you can dictate the sizes. All the pics above are nice, but they are all of proper sized shelves. In fact, you could always buy 'off the shelf' units and move them along the wall at will. Comments (7)I'm inclined to agree with Jonathan but if you do want to go with the chimney concept and want a bit more variation to the 'shape' of the wall then there are a few things you could do. We've got an actual chimney breast and have put occasional bench seating either side with hidden storage below, which is super useful for times of year when we have extra visitors and need a few extra seats for bottoms! (Excuse the empty holes in the middle- waiting for our log delivery!) If you thought carefully about the actual chimney breast higher up I guess it depends on what you want above it- a large mirror or picture could easily be put up on top concealing a cupboard door behind it for hidden storage. Alternatively you could have the 'sides' of the chimney breast with hidden doors (push close / push open) to storage, so long as you think carefully about what height your shelves are at and avoid the doors opening into them. I always think books look quite nice in fireplaces, especially if you paint the inside a bold colour as a backdrop to them. I'm sure there are lots of other options too! Hope it helps! Comments (7)Remember to look at the aspect of the room, before going for a strong teal colour. It’s extraordinary how different the colours look, depending on whether the room faces north, south, east, or west. And don’t forget nighttime with electric lighting. Also, if your sofa is a deep teal, you could choose a much paler aqua/greeny blue, for your feature walls, and the other walls maybe an even paler shade than those, if your room is light. On the other hand, if the room is a bit gloomy, you could use a contrasting and complementary colour for the feature walls, such as a deep gold, a warm peach, or apricot, or even a warm soft pink (similar, maybe, to F&B’s Setting Plaster or Pink Ground). Depends upon what colours you actually like, as you have to live with it. Teal is basically a blue green, so if not using teal and its paler tones for walls, look for colours that are warm, on the opposite side of the colour wheel....See More
