Retractable awning ($2500) - would be a lighter neutral brown
Pergola with retractable canopies ($5000) - would be a solid medium gray, not striped

Ideas for a pergola
Comments (8)Nmelbourn, you could install an awning or some sail shades. A pergola is also great, even a gazebo. I also want something for our bi-folding doors, but just can't decide which is best. This is a small selection of the things I've been looking at: http://www.gardensite.co.uk/Garden_Structures/Easy_Fit_Wall_Mounted_Gazebo_Shade_3_metres.htm http://canopy.cunninghamcovers.co.uk/rectangular-garden-sail-canopy.php http://www.primrose-awnings.co.uk/?src=shop_department_m http://www.primrose.co.uk/sail-shades-c-85.html?src=shop_department_m_top_85...See MoreOur patio design
Comments (2)A pergola with a canopy sounds lovely! Instead of a bench maybe you could get an outdoor seating set with table? And it may take a little while to grow, so maybe not ideal as an immediate solution, but a "natural" pergola of climbing plants could be nice. Comments (23)Hi Tani Our garden is west facing & we have a window either side of the bifolds. We chose not to have roof openings to avoid extra heat from the sun. We are also considering adding an pergola/awning or something similar so that we can have the blinds open in summer without the hot sun streaming in. I am not a fan of hot weather (hence the integral blinds & air con) so avoid it as much as possible. I’m a bit confused what you mean about access to the traffic door...ours is by the kitchen end & is ideal. I’ve added a few pics so you can see our set up....See MoreNeed inspiration for dead outside space
Comments (22)Dare i say it....................probably.......................conservatories have had their day. They will add space, but you have to keep closing the doors and going in and out as they're not the warmest of places unless you splash out on glass roofs, or dismiss the roof design and go for a solid plastered ceiling etc. I don't think it's dead space, it could be a really nice patio right outside the conservatory, after all, you wouldn't constantly want to sit on the grass, you have a patio. It's also directly off the lounge or dining area.........perfect. I know that extensions are more expensive, however, they add room and light because you can take the internal doors away. If you need more space, i'd get rid of the the conservatories and have an extension across the back taking in both spaces. Putting up another conservatory is just adding another box, and it will darken the room to the right and hide the lovely casement doors. So, an extension right across the back taking the two areas in is far preferable. It adds permanent space usable all year round with no internal doors getting in the way....See Moremonicamarie
