Long dark living room area - how to separate dining living areas?
Comments (6)How about putting the chest of drawers under the window so it is visible when you first walk into the room. Then put the desk where the chest of drawers is currently. I would then get a large storage TV unit for the end wall where the dark furniture is. This would be best in white or taupe to keep it light in that end of the room. You could even get this made in the same units as the kitchen cupboards. I would buy new 3 seater sofas in a traditional or classic style to suit the antiques in a beige colour linen and then two armchairs in a patterned material - floral or stripe to suit your personal taste. I would keep the sofas in the same position and place the two armchairs facing the TV unit, side by side. You would need to make sure the armchairs were placed so they were easy to walk around and they would need to be small but comfortable. Keep the table where it is and update the lamp to a more statement piece. An orchid (fake or real) on the chest of drawers would add a touch of class. I quite like the rug that is there as it goes nicely with the antiques and you could bring out the blues with a few duck egg blue coloured cushions, and a duck egg blue roman blind would soften the window. Just some ideas.... I'd love to see photos when you've finished, it's a lovely space!...See Morecolour - should we continue the blue or go pale?
Comments (10)Hi guys, Thanks both for the comments - I should have been clearer - the cornice (and above the picture rail) are already painted in slaked lime... they were a very big job and am definitely not doing them again - I used the same colour as the walls and ceiling as whilst they're lovely, they have some areas where they're not in great condition so needed them to blend in slightly (they've had quite a bit of repair work etc!). The grey we've chosen for the kitchen (though not painted yet so up for debate!) is 'dash of soot' with the 'dock blue' on the island. I think painting the doors and skirting could look good painted in the same blue... but I'm not sure I could do the windows as well - we're getting into seriously dark territory then!! Minnie - I love that picture - and it shows how the pale and the blue could look lovely together on a wall! We're definitely going brass for handles and knobs so will check out buster and punch - thanks for the tip! And it's interesting what you say about the kitchen cabinet colours AJ.... the indigo blue would be on the island - with the wall cupboards (which dont have a gap for the worktop - but the top cabinets are set back a little showing an oak worktop - with appliance garage etc) going up very tall - to 255cm.... we thought having these a paler colour would stop them closing in on the room - and I'm not sure we're keen on a paler blue - but nor did we want a cream/beige - like a darker version of the slaked lime might look... It's so tricky to know if we're doing the right thing! And are doing the work ourselves so aren't keen on having to do too much more of the painting than we need to! Cheers Greg...See MoreWhere should we put the kitchen?
Comments (7)I would go for room 2 for the kitchen and a larger dining area as kitchens don’t need to be big. Have you considered moving the wall from the hall back so that room 1 and 2 are the same length - if you are the blocking off one of the doors anyway it becomes a pointless small corridor........See MoreShould we knock this wall down?
Comments (14)I would leave it and do it properly. If you do it now, you will have mismatched floors with a huge gap between them with no floor and provably a hole all along where that wall is, then you have mismatched wall colours, then you'll try to tie it all together by spending money on paint, rugs, cheap make-do floor, curtains etc to tie it together.... then eventually all that will go to waste when you go your extension. All your make-do things will still never look right to you as what you actually want to do is the real thing and you will only be happy when that's done. 2 years is nothing to wait! We waited 4 years, lived with red striped wall paper, green carpet etc and done it right....See MoreJuliet Docherty
