I have the same. Look on my ideas book 'my house project' and it shows what I have done. Painted Portland Stone (little Green) and tiles the same colour. It is much warmer that it was. I have complemented with turquoise, greens and mustards.

Hi, I'd look at the other colours which will be utilised in the room such as flooring, doors, etc and Basey decision on that. Personally, feel that both oak and white could work. Oak brings about a nice Warmth when paired with grey whilst white is a more contemporary option.

Thanks for all the comments. In reference to drawing attention to it, it's a fair point but isn't it a bit like a skirting board? Dark wall, white skirting board, stands out. We all do it. White walls with white skirting board would look odd, no? Personally, I like the dark grey pelmet (by the way, ignore the units below, there's no worktop on them at the moment) partly because it's not doing what is always done and partly because it does act a bit like an underline. My more important other half, however, prefers the light grey. She's the boss so she wins :/

We've been for a look around a tiling store today and played around with some ideas. We really like the below tile, similar to what was recommended above; We compared it against a wooden effect floor tile, an anthracite tile, and a "cement" coloured tile; The bathroom itself is fairly small; approx 2m x 2.5m. Not sure if the wood or the anthracite might be too dark for the room?

It's 1920's. High ceilings and a picture rail. We've got floor boards rather than carpet but a throw in those colours would look lovely oneplan thanks

oh and that's another question. Same colour above and below picture rail or above it the same as the ceiling?

How about a moss green cushion for the chair and a tartan throw with the pink in it for the sofa. As a Scot I'm right behind tartan, and moss green and heather seem particularly Scottish colours. If there's a third colour in the tartan, then perhaps use that as a cushion cover or wall colour.

As it's a 20s house, I'd match the wall above the picture rail to the ceiling. You've probably got decently high ceilings but not as high as Victorian/Edwardian.

This might give you an idea or two, perhaps a plum colour for the wall? If it's south facing with a big window you'll get lots of light so it could take a dark colour, the warmth of plum might make it cosy in winter. I'd keep the ceiling a light colour though.

Hi. In answer to your wall Q, I'd say Farrow and Ball Elephant's breath and skimming stone. You get can both colours mixed at Dulux. More durable in the Dulux Trade too. Pictures when you are done please.

Beautiful furniture! I would put a dark colour on your walls. Maybe moles breath or railings (f&b). It would make all these lovely furniture pop out + any art work would look amazing against a dark background. I would paint it all the same colour, including the skirting and dado, door, door frame....

What colour and tone is the floor and do you want to go dark and moody?

Thanks all. I'm glad you think they go together ok. It was more accident than design!

the floor is pine. I like the idea of dark and moody but not sure it'll work as the room is only 3.75 x 3.75

i'm off to get some testers - will report back!

The colours are perfect complementaries (think olive and pale raspberry). If the floor is pale and warm, you might want to go for a cooler colour for the walls. F&B drop cloth is a new colour which looks really nice.

You might consider Farrow and Balls Old white which reads as grey in some lights but in one of my former houses looked an elegant green/ neutral.
I would paint the ceiling off white then the woodwork and coving whatever colour you have in the rest of the house for continuity. If you have yet to make the choice of woodwork colours I like All White (F&B) as it is definitely white white without the harsh blueness of a brilliant white and therefore sits better in an older house.

Hello there,

I was a rep for Benjamin Moore paints and have worked with a lot of paint colours - they have 3500 in the full collection! For a small room you need a colour with warmth in it a hint of yellow to reflect the light but it will predominantly depend on the colour and amount of light coming in to your room. I would be happy to order some large samples of colour sheets that are sprayed in the actual colour so you can check the tone works in your room free of charge. I would think a colour called Balboa Mist or around this tone would work, this is what the Americans call a 'Greige' a warm grey. Please drop me a email simren@jagdev.com. Thank you!
