House Redesign Advice

We are hoping to get our extension done soon and are open for different ideas. We don't mind changing the layout of the rooms. It is a semi-detached property (detached from the right) and we really want to get our upstairs side extension done as well. However, the only problem with this is that the window in our living room will not receive any light, and we also need the space underneath the upper storey extension to park our cars. (please excuse the 2-minute sketch that looks like it was done by a 5 year-old!)

For others - here's a snap of a link on Emmys other thread that helps point out where window is in living room, that later, will have a flyover from first floor above it - hence blocking light !

Emmy - do you have the original estate agents plan that shoes sizes ?!

Hi I think you should consider completely 'flipping' the space, using the grass area as your driveway/parking area, and joining the rest of your current parking/bin area to the paved area you already use for sitting eating. To show you what I mean, in the image below the new driveway area is in blue, and the new garden area is in red. I appreciate this probably means more work/cost in digging up and turfing some paved bits and paving some grassed areas, but to me the advantages are: a parking area wide enough to get two cars in and out past the other; it consolidates both the spaces you use for leisure into a single, larger area; your kids will be able to get to the play area by the back door, rather than by the front. This might be safer/more convenient; and if you built a fence between the red and blue sections you could improve security by removing easy access to the back of the house. I love the sunken lounge feature with the stairs and would do a ski chalet style. Your ceilings look high so you could add wooden beams and make a feature of it such as the pictures below, timber and faux fur elements suit this look.

Could you take the wall out between the kitchen and dining room and use that space as your games room? Would it be big enough? Then use the games room as the kitchen/dining area. That doesn’t do,Ce the issue of a window in the lounge. Is the house detached?

There are a few options:

You could incorporate a faux chimney in the upper storey extension to accomodate a light tunnel for the lounge examples here - then use Large mirrors and uplighting to bounce the light around.

You could also borrow light from elsewhere by installing glass blocks or internal windows between Living 1 & Living 2 or between the Kitchen and living 2- there are some good examples on here http://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/query/internal-windows/nqrwns

Also you could make the kitchen door glass to borrow light from the kitchen.
