What is your favourite patio door style?

The range of patio door styles available and their unique pros and cons makes choosing a favourite tricky!

Floor-to-ceiling height and wall-spanning patio doors can provide an appealing contemporary aesthetic and flood a room with natural light, but do have their pitfalls in a potential lack of privacy, or can simply be a mismatch for more traditional interiors. Your favourite in theory also may not align with the patio doors you actually have for reasons of appearance vs. practicality.

Surely, it depends on the style of the room. Bifold doors look great in modern rooms; French doors look brilliant in rooms that have retained their period style

We built an extension on our last house (3 storey 1850's victorian town house). Most of the new back wall was a bifolding sliding oak door. We were happy with them and they looked good but we rarely had them open all the way. For this reason we have decided not to have them again in our new house. This time we are opting for 3 sets of french doors similar to the house in the picture above. There are some advantages over the folding sliding doors. It allows the wall space to be used in between each set of doors. It looks nicer in my opinion and you could curtain the 3 sets of doors if you wish. There was no point putting curtains on a folding sliding door because you would end up with a whole wall of fabric which wouldn't look great so we lost our privacy. By the way our new house is a ugly 1955 build. We are trying to make it look traditional with an exterior makeover.

I like too many things so I suppose mine is eclectic. My absolute delight is the Art Deco Moderne style; beautiful veneers, chrome, mirrors, fabrics and shapes, unfortunately I'm far to untidy and clumsy to live with it.

We don't have a preference and when we are starting on a new project we consider all options. Bi-fold are ubiquitous and often we have Clients coming to us asking for bi-folds ... and revert to another system which is more appropriate for the proposed design. The style has got to suit the property - whether it be the original or an extension. That doesn't mean that it has to be 'old' or 'new' - it just has to fit. Glazing systems are constantly being improved & updated - with more thermally efficient frames & glazing etc - so it's important to look at any project with 'fresh' eyes. Having said all that ... I do love a large pivot door!

I find that it always depends on the style of the interior and exterior space. Modern spaces usually use Bifold doors. French doors are chosen for more like period style.
