Where do you buy your duvets and bedding from?

I've had goose down (always had uneven fill after a while), mulberry silk (too heavy and cold) and synthetic fibre (starting to deflate a bit) in the past but always feel like they're never quite as plump and light as I want them to be.

My current one is from Dunelm which is soft and well priced but buying duvets in particular feels like such a gamble. You don't really know how good it'll be till you get it home and try it out!

So does anyone have a product or brand they swear by? What do you look for in a good duvet? Is it worth spending a small fortune or are their quality bargains to be had?

We bought new last year and went for a synthetic microfill. We found it was too hot and have been back with our years old IKEA goose down one ever since!

Weekly? Oh, how I wish it were only weekly. I'm out there nearly every day culling the three-cornered leek that has reappeared as a thick blanket despite me culling it in the first spring I was here, in my new house, then finding it had reappeared hugely aggressively last year and now, in my third spring, it's even thicker and even more widespread - and is now not only in the flower beds but also in the lawn, thick along the edge, scattered within it. Front and back. It takes about two hours to clear about a square yard - digging under the bulbs; banging off the (very good, I've been told) soil in which there are always several earthworms which I need to hang on to (obviously); then picking out the tiniest bulbs left behind. I don't think I can ever finish it this year - as happened last year - which means the problem will go on for decades. I don't really have the time (I need to work, I need a life beyond digging and clearing). The only solution I can think of is to bring in help but my budget won't allow that. I value having lawn so paving it over isn't an option. I will have less planting space, which will eventually mean less weeding, but it's not something I can do right now - I've too much to do to bring the indoors up to date. I disagree with Jo DP. The previous owners had a keep it wild policy and now I have this big problem with a massively invasive plant. And, yes, I have tried using it in recipes - it really isn't worth the effort of keeping it under control (to have a limited supply). I'm an experienced and adventurous cook and three-cornered leek is an overrated ingredient, even though it's free and in my garden.

I'm not sure about either to be honest, sorry. I appreciate the ideas though! I think where i'm struggling is i quite like something gold/marble, i'm just aware I have gone for quite statement pieces so I want everything to effortlessly flow together and look well-styled but not gaudy/mish-mashed. I suppose I know how i want it to feel i.e. luxurious, elegant and feminine rather than how i want it to look, if that makes sense? You can get duvet covers that tuck in at the bottom of the bed, I suppose to keep the duvet from falling off the bed. I just bought my son a single duvet cover from La Redoute and it has a a sort of flap/neck/tunnel at the bottom where you put the duvet in. No buttons or poppers needed. This flap then tucks under the mattress. It was pure chance that the cover had this feature though as it wasn’t mentioned in the product description. I have seen similar tuck in flaps in European hotels so It may be something that is normal on the continent. Anyway, you can obviously put your choice of duvet inside.

There’s an eBay seller called modernancient who has mostly mid century stuff. You can also just search eBay for 1950s furniture or 1960s furniture and that will bring up you loads of midcentury items. Also worth looking at your local auction house, our local one has masses of mid century furniture every week.

I told my wife about this one as she's been through more duvets than I care to remember. We get hot in bed (no, no dirty thoughts..........we're far too old for that! Oh yes, and we're married! ).

We firstly tried wool, too hot even the summer 7.5 tog used in the winter. NO

Goose down, wraps itself around you, you end up lying on half of it, and felt trapped. NO

Back to synthetic as recommended by a lady of a certain age in Dunelm as she too was hot.

We finally settled as a last ditch attempt to sleep under a duvet again after a 6 year absence for this one:_ dunelm duvet

It's as cheap as chips ( which still erks me after the money we've spent on very expensive duvets claiming to be cool, moisutr wicking, breathable etc )

It's great!

Summary..................everyone is individual and apparently like shoes, not one size fits all, it doesn't matter where you get it from or what it costs, if you don't like that type it won't suit!

Better to go to a few shops, tell the sales people, what you like, what you don't and let them help you.

I'm curious about the wool one's jamiethepony mentioned as I've not tried one of these. Of course I know duvet's are a relatively new phenomenon and in the UK wool blankets were the staple for many many years. Are the wool duvets rather heavy though?

Man about the House I think you've definitely picked up on part of the issue - everyone is different! My fiancee gets really hot and bothered (its hard to write these things without sounding dodgy is't it?!) with even a lightweight duvet whereas I'd be snug and happy with a full winter one and get really cold with a thin duvet.

The dunelm one I have at the moment is only just warm enough for me but too hot for my partner. Beginning to think I should just get one of those fasten together type ones where you can have two different tog singles together.

I've solved part of the issue by getting a duel control electric mattress protector which means I can warm my side up to a toasty temperature!

We used to have down and feather. Each morning it required a good shake to distribute the feathers creating dust in the bedroom. We also had the same in our guest bedroom. My son broke his tib and fib and had to move back in with us for a couple of weeks as we had a downstairs loo and he could not manage the stairs in his own house.

He found the down and feather duvet far too heavy on his leg to the point that he could not sleep under it. That persuaded us to swap to a cheaper quilt with a polyester filling. We've stuck to it ever since. I think (from recollection) the quilt was from Matalan. The best covers I've had have been from Dunelm.

the wool duvets aren't the lightest, though I wouldn't say they are very heavy, my hubby prefers duvets to have some weight anyway, it reminds him of his childhood. we have a middleweight one and use it from October to march and put a blanket on top when it's really cold. we have normal synthetic duvets for later spring and summer but we will replace with a lighter wool one at some point. I do feel like they regulate the temperature better. there are loads of reviews on the website worth checking out.

We have IKEA summer weight King Size duvet , their cheapest, in winter and the same only double bed size in summer. they wash well and stay even. We're happy.

We have a John Lewis goose feather and down duvet - expensive but worth it. It has the two weights that button together, so that you can adjust for the season (I think they are 3.5 and 9.5 tog). We usually buy our pillows from there but recently invested in a couple of memory foam ones from Dreams which are good. Previously we bought duvet covers and sheets from Ikea but after renovating our bedroom recently splashed out on some from the White Company, which are lovely. We got them during a sale with 70% off. We also bought fantastic fitted King Size sheets from TK Maxx for £17.99 - bargain!

we have had goose down which my husband prefers - recently bought a lovely one from John Lewis(expensive) but for my daughter a fabulous one, and much cheaper, from Soak & Sleep - i have been very impressed with their products. but if you are looking for a cheaper one - the cheapest synthetic one that John Lewis sell - is so soft and lovely and warm - highly recommend it!

Well, at last we are happy with our choice, a single duvet each, all seasons type, goose down from John Lewis. My husband feels the heat, so he uses the thin summer one all year, except when it is very hot, then he just uses a sheet, or when it is very cold then he uses the thicker one. I use the winter one all year, the two together, except when it is very cold, then I add his spare one to mine, if it ever gets too hot for me in the summer, then I occasionally use the lightweight one on it's own! To make the bed look good we have a bedspread from John Lewis over the top. Regarding bedding, the best cotton fitted sheets come from John Lewis sale, they are cleverly made to stay put and they do. I have excellent cotton pillowcases which were from the late 1950's, the quality is unbeatable, my mother had a number which she hadn't used and I just wish they were still available, from memory they were made by a firm called Finlay's and they were made in Scotland. The duvet covers I am using came from John Lewis and Debenhams, both cotton and both in the sale. On our spare bed I have White Company sheets etc. and on the twin beds in the other room I have feather and down duvets from Argos and the covers were from the Sheridan seconds shop, very good quality and great value. I prefer to have reasonable quality, if I was very rich I would have freshly laundered linen bedding ironed correctly and an army of helpers to do the donkey work each day, never mind saving the planet, nor the crumpled look!

Mulberry silk duvet here-patchwork cotton quilt on top in summer with a woollen throw in winter.

I used John Lewis but now I am using Sleep and Soak who have some great products - I have started recommending them to my clients too! If you have an interior designer you can request they purchase for your design and get trade prices.

If like me you don't want to/can't spend a fortune on a good duvet, TKmaxx/Homesense are good! They had a variety of the usual expensive branded ones at good prices. I got one for my daughter by Snuggledown of Norway - it's lovely! And cost under £30!

I love my duckdown duvet but can't bear the thought of my dog lying on it and squashing it, so i use a wool duvet which is totally squash-proof! In summer it's sheets and a Forever England eiderdown with or without blankets as needed. Cotton sheets from Sainsbury's and matalan are good quality and affordable, whilst La Redoute and Zara Home do some wonderful richly-coloured duvet covers (I'm not one for calm neutrals, me!) x

Rather late to this discussion but I'm another advocate for the Baavet wool duvet I was a doubter but we use it all year round, even take it away in the campervan to France in the summer! We both struggled to agree on warmth factors before but this totally regulates. I also put a wool blanket under the bottom sheet to ensure all round natural fabrics. Worth the investment in my opinion.
