Recessed lighting - contemporary or clinical?

A seemingly popular lighting choice is the recessed light, probably because of the sheer brightness it can bring to a room while being so compact and contemporary-looking. Though I do love a recessed light I feel that too many, or rooms purely lit by them alone run the risk of losing the very warmth recessed lights exist to create!

But - what are your thoughts on recessed lights? The only way to go, or overrated? Share your thoughts with us below!

most of the times are wrongly used and too many in a house. Another problem I often encounter in clients house is the silver rim spotlight on the white ceiling, what a turn off.

D&b I think that's why Ive been put off downlighters. Why do people do that?

Hello comegetme.. the pics are really coming along.. I do feel the red is too prominent with the calmer colours in the room... I would personally try to find something that offers "red" but not quite in such a bold way.. Unless the rear wall was red too... I like the bottom version but the sofa and chair still stand out too much.. I think layering with throws is fine, maybe a beige and a colour that accents the walls of said bottom image.. .. Over 1 side to break up the brown is all you need to do.. Maybe a little table lamp in red too and you have the cushions.. Looking good! : ))

LED is very much the present and will be the only option in the future. Why install a outdated technology like halogen or incandescent lighting? LED has many advantages with different colour temperatures, very good colour rendering, variable angles of light and of course low running and maintenance costs. Its very much down to choosing the correct LED lighting for your project.

It entirely depends on your location and type of property. I think it would be really cool to build a window seat in that recessed window area. Use the blue wall as a feature wall for a focal point like a fireplace (some plug in electric ones are really nice looking these days) and then accessorise with rug, funky light fitting, standing lamp and soft furnishings. Hard to pick out colour schemes or themes without knowing more though really

I guess is insecurity, many people are afraid of the end result and they end up putting too many of them across the whole room . when you know what to do downlights can offer several effective options like attracting attention to a corner or a sculpture and create pathos in the ambiance.

I have recessed lighting in our open plan kitchen diner and bathroom but no where else in the house. If you set the lights correctly with circuits it can create a great look and feel to the room. Check out this link to a blog called Mad About The House, in collaboration with Sally Storey - Lighting specialist, they devised information sessions for each area of the house. I used the session for my kitchen diner and it worked a treat.

Gross gross. Bought a Victorian, the previous owners had very boring taste but they put in these lights with a silver rim on white ceilings, it's so shocking I feel I'm in a nightclub. In some rooms they even removed the pendant lights and just have these, it's like a OR. I would like to change them but the cost seems high for something that just annoys me, can you paint them?

im slowly adding in pendant lighting for looks but there are still these little space saucers
