Climbers on the exterior of your home - dream or nightmare?

To me, climbing plants on an exterior are a dream, at least as far as appearance is concerned.

I love all equally - ivies, wisterias, passifloras.

In practice, I realise all is not as idyllic as it seems, especially with climbers like the common English ivy which poses a structural threat to your house (who knew plants could be so powerful?). But, with the right upkeep, can the fairytale-like aesthetic they provide outweigh potential negatives?

Absolute dream!
Total nightmare...
