Very high bathroom window dressing

What would look good on my bathroom window? The wood pelmets are original and we have them elsewhere in house, so need to keep them.

But the windows are pretty high, they start at about chest height. I want something quite warm and cosy feeling - maybe blinds and a curtain too? How long should I do a curtain?

Would love advice!

How about shutters for practical usage and sheer light (waterproof) curtains to the floor. It could be cosy but also beachy / luxurious feeling.

Im totally pretending this is my bathroom ha ha.

If you were really wild you could use this type of beautiful panelling in certain areas too... (they also have timber blinds behind which look nice)

These are the kinds of sheer curtains I was thinking of, I like they only used it on one wall and its nice that it is floor to ceiling, but it would work with the pelmet too.

Or more traditional type curtains.. they still look gorgeous!

I absolutely hate those trim pieces. When you are spending hundreds or thousands on tile to do a project and then finish it with these trim products it looks cheap and tacky. Plus when you are using a classic or vintage tile those shiny metal pieces or worse the cheap white plastic doesn't match. Just ruins the whole thing. I suspect builders like this kind of trim because it fast and easy to use and covers a multitude of sins. You don't have to be a particularly skilled tiler. Nor do you have to do any special cuts.

Overall it’s a lovely space. I think the towels & blind are ok colour wise but the blind in particular is too plain. The top half of the room is very stark in contrast to the bottom half with the tiling, etc. Rather than replacing the blind, it may help to add some artwork - maybe to the left of the window which will distract from the plain blind. The range have some very reasonable priced pictures. Either one tall narrow image or 2 or 3 smaller ones. I agree with the plants also - always useful to inject such life into a room.

Bah, wrote a long reply and it all disappeared! 😥 Anyway, it was saying I finally managed to get a builder here AND a quote from them, lol. Was £760 to put a window in NOT including external rendering (pebble dash!) or internal plastering etc so it’s a lot of money. It can’t be too deep either because I didn’t realise the outside gate is in the way so it will end up just being a narrow slit. However, he was a nice guy and knows my neighbour well (who recommended him) and he asked to look in the loft space and said we could actually have a velux on the side which we didn’t think we could have. He doesn’t do them (need a roofer for that) but he said it would need a joiner to create a tunnel inside. Next step is to get prices for that but our roofer is booked up for another month with roof repairs (including one for us!) so will have to be patient, bah. Lol. Internal window idea - we were going to do that and if the velux is too expensive then we still will. Will be better than nothing I guess but not very bright. Sun tunnel would probably cost the same as a velux to put in but the latter will give us more light so ..... Watch this space!

@Nicola M (Nicola) well we went to a new local tile shop the other day and she persuaded me to stick with the giant tiles, but still tiling them as brickwork effect. I saw an amazing concrete one that was a nice colour, wasn't patchy but was out of our budget (£40sqm)!! eek. My OH just said to order them as he knows how stressed I have been trying to find something I like, LOL. There were some other lovely ones but in the wrong shape ie 600's which I don't like on the wall personally. I haven't ordered them yet but they are typically special order so I my tiler is coming to measure today so I can be sure to have enough. Hence my questions about where to tile to as we are trying to save money, haha. I was going to do the floor as well so it all runs through but I think it will need some pattern/oomph in the room with all grey tiles. These are the ones in the Gris colour. thank you. I am erring on the side of relaxed roman blinds or traditional full curtains. Need some luxury and movement.

Definitely curtains and I would go for a William Morris fabric if it was my bathroom.

I'd start by painting the walls white. Add a large , ornate floor standing mirror and a tall green plant. I don't know where your light source is but a little chandelier would look gorgeous and make your room look sumptuous. I think long curtains may look odd on such short windows but roman blinds or shutters as already mentioned would also look lovely. Add candles and coloured towels would give added warmth.

Thank you. I've added a few more pics to show that it wouldn't really work to paint the walls white given the tiles..... I am going to change the mirror over the basin to a more ornate frame.

It difficult to do a floor standing one as the pipes are boxed in behind the toilet with the long white box with shelf? Should I maybe paint that box the darker green?

Are the green walls painted? It's just that having two different colours on a wall tends to make the room look smaller.
I'd replace the picture with an expanse of mirror glass. It would bring more light into your room. Having pale coloured flooring would also bring it all together. The pipe box and skirting would then blend into the flooring.

Thanks. I don't know why it just doesn't look as polished as the inspo. I've used the paint, tile and floor colours exactly the same. Can't really afford to replace anything big like that. Good call on the picture though.

Hi Susanna. The room is lovely, I just think you need to look at accessorising. A more ornate mirror will change the look and I'm not sure the photo goes. If you want to keep it I'd paint the frame in the wall colour. Add a white orchid or a few good quality faux stems on the windowsill. Clear all your everyday toiletries from the shelf and add a lidded candle and perhaps a nice hand soap and lotion. I'd paint the boxing in in the green. I think curtains will overwhelm the room so would go for blinds maybe in a pale damask pattern. Look at a hammam towel or embroidered one for a hand towel. What's between the sink and shower?

It is a very light room, just not well lit for photographs as you are always photographing into the light source!

I was advised by the architect to take the darker green level up to the window sill. This is quite high, but she thought it was more pleasing.

Does anyone think I should do that - and just change out 2 courses of tiles to match?

I can't quite see the floor and ceilings but I think it looks right. I'd work in 1/3's ie typical height for a dado. Raising it would appear to chop the room in half

True.

A further idea - perhaps I could tile around the two walls of the bath corner with the darker green tiles. There is little interest behind the bath and its the first thing you see - the focal point almost.....

I really think it's a great basis for a lovely bathroom as it is. Here's what I would change to make it into the lovely, relaxed and luxurious space you're aiming for: roman blinds, change the photo frame for framed art with green tones in it, change the mirror for a larger and more elaborate one, find a small cart/trolley that holds towels and the items for daily use that are now on the little planchet. If you have space for that? There are very narrow ones that might work?

Hi Susanna, We would advise against curtains in a bathroom because of the damp conditions. A set of waterproof roller blinds would be more practical.
