vinyl roll or tiles?

Hi all,

My dilemma is this:

I need to replace the flooring in my through lounge/ dining room. Currently we have laminate which is old and curling in some places due to water damage.

The issues facing us are these-

FLOORING TYPE SPECIFICATION
We have a dog who suffers with bouts of incontinence, so whatever we put down must be watertight.

INSTALLATION
We have a few pieces of large heavy furniture that absolutely won't get out of the room unless we break them up/destroy them (or take windows out and put them in a container for the floor installation- we don't have the budget for this)

MY ASSUMPTIONS
I'm thinking that vinyl roll would be the best option but I think installation of a roll won't be possible because we can't clear the entire floor in one go.

LVT on the other hand could be a go-er, as we can clear one half of the room, get the floor laid, give it a few days to cure, move the furniture to the new floor and get the other half done....however, to guarantee its watertight, I'm thinking it will need to be varnished.

WHAT I DON'T KNOW
Can LVT be varnished?
Would this solution prove as costly as real wood parquet?
What other options have I not considered?

Ps any suggestions to get rid of the dog won't fix the issue as I will then be heart broken and spend all the budget on booze to drown my sorrows and still have a crappy floor (pardon the pun!)

LVT are pretty safe bet provided you have them laid properly and floor prepped beforehand. Another benefit is that if tile gets scratched or spoilt at later date you can just cut it out and replace. They're not cheapest but I think worth the money; we have dog and karndean

Porcelain is a tough tile which will not crack or break easily. they are very long lasting. vinyl is out dated and just doesn't look good. Your other option should be ceramic tiles. So it should be between ceramic and porcelain. I'd still recommend porcelain but ceramic is cheaper, that's the biggest advantage of ceramic. Depends whether you want efficient or always warm underfoot? Efficiency of UFH affected by insulation. How airtight is the house? Do you have mechanical ventilation etc?

Hello, considering installing these floor tiles in our new kitchen: https://bit.ly/2TYNSkG The sample I’ve received looks good but always hard to know how it would look in the final project. We like the concrete ‘look’ but I would really like to hear people’s experiences of using such tiles or similar: Does it ever look tacky/ aka.....it’s ‘mock concrete/wood/porcelain’ etc How has the quality fared: this would be a high traffic area for us so what have people’s experiences been/would you need to install special underlay, etc The price seems too good to be true so I’m dubious/very keen to hear from people who have used! Hi, Thanks for replies, broke some pieces off with a wall paper scraper as advised by testing company and had them tested this morning (£48 for same day) and the mastic/adhesive was clear but the tiles contained chrysolite asbestos, the company seemed pretty relaxed about it whereas I was concerned had released fibres breaking the tile to get samples (I was in proper mask and gloves) - they said almost impossible to release the fibres from breaking them as so well bonded (unlike cement board where apparently more easily released) and this was backed up by removal company that spoke to who just said stick mask on and pull them up (going to chop the floorboards and lift them that way) and don't worry if break. What is weird if you go online there everything points to breaking them releasing fibres, no idea who is right, asked if should get air reassurance test done and they said would be waste of money. So guess what is done is done and will wipe area down and get on with rest of renovation and hope more doesn't show up anywhere unexpected. Lawrence

Hello, I don't want to add a further complication but what is under your current laminate floor? If it is concrete you might need to screed the floor before laying roll or tile vinyl which could be a challenge if you can only do sections of the room at a time. You also mention water damage, I don't know what the cause of this was but if it was flooding you should also check moisture levels in case a damp proof membrane is also needed If you are getting a local supplier to fit the new flooring they will be able to advise you.

If you end up going down the vinyl route a good fitter (assuming a team of 2) could work around your furniture and still lay a roll. Vinyl planks or tiles look better but obviously cost more. If fitted properly they should be able to resist dog accidents.

Thanks all,

We have floor boards under the existing laminate, and the water damage is down to the dog always peeing in the same spot...at least he's consistent.... hence the need for the flooring to be water tight.

Gerflor has a really good collection of LVT flooring that´s waterproof. My friend has the same problem with her 2 dogs, she got it and it looks really good, and they can also be used in the bathroom. http://www.bricoflor.co.uk/flooring/lvt-flooring.html?vl_mark=273
