What is the best colour choice for my floor?

When choosing a specific colour for your hardwood flooring it can be a daunting task.
With so many stains, finishes and styles of wood flooring this may be
the most difficult part when it comes to it. Once it’s down there’s no
going back… or is there?

The natural beauty of wood is that it is a
reusable product, hence where reclaimed wood flooring comes from. For
the most part, the majority of flooring laid is manufactured and new
when sold. It can come either finished or unfinished. You may have a
rough idea in terms of a dark, light or medium colours that you would
like to match an existing or soon to be existing decor. A pre-ordering
tip it may be best to check online for images of different types of
decor similar to your own. Compare the type of colours used for the
flooring. Fashion is constantly changing so you may be surprised when
colours you may not have thought of sway your final decision.

Another
tip is to get a sample of the flooring when you have a rough idea of
the colour you’re trying to achieve. Physically seeing the sample in
your hand and perhaps placing it alongside existing decor to match up,
you have a more accurate choice when deciding what to go for.

To give you a wild card what about a maple laminate or even a nice modern carpet in a cream or pale grey, pale blue or pale pink. Yes you'll see what I'm getting at a pale colour of flooring would be better looking in my opinion. ( I have oak hardwood flooring with a really pale silver grey wall in my lounge I also have OHW in my hallway with Apple white walls so I concur with the oak suggestion too although I wanted maple coloured hard wood when we were decorating??!! yeah. i have solid wood. it's one of the click ones. i still like it. i like the wood i chose. HOWEVER................. i agree....... it can contract/expand.it HAS happened to me. not sure when it goes from summer to autumn. winter to spring. its been fixed by making sure the wood has space by the skirting boards and not to over wet when mopping. if i ever got solid flooring again, it would definitely have to have nails in it, not just the click-lock in. but my husband and i said, that if we ever put in wood floors again, wherever we are.... we MIGHT go for the engineered ones. there are loads of great ones. go for the best one. here is a houzz bookmark, if you can open it.... https://www.houzz.co.uk/magazine/ask-an-expert-choose-the-right-flooring-for-your-open-plan-design-stsetivw-vs~35070778

Hello Tom, I think it could be a very relaxing and inviting room - A mid century style sofa with legs would be ideal (Think mad men and stylish!) ... Something less solid and thus the feel is more open within the flooring spatially.. A 3 seater and perhaps two chairs.. Something that would work well with your chosen scheme (grey or other)... Perhaps have the sofa facing that little window wall with some chairs opposite.. So there's less of a "tunnel" You could then have a different shaped coffee table.. I'd suggest the less solid idea with any cabinetry like a console or sideboard.. Small cabinets.. Anything with legs! Even a wardrobe is a nice element in a living room.. Storage for crockery etc or the flat screen for example or projector.. Given the height, you could afford to have a larger ceiling light fitting here and why not have a look at Ebay. There are some really fantastic finds for vintage and interesting.. I'd bring the glass table out of that window recess a bit further... So it could be a multi- functioning table... Working, eating, socialising.. You may find then you don't need the other wooden table.. Chairs are other good finds on ebay or perhaps a visit to an antiques fair or two.. Mirrors could be interesting here too with the slope of the ceiling curve.. Plain and square.. if at all and hung on an angle reflects light downward.. especially good with a dark scheme... Now on to some colour... You might want to take inspiration from the rug too.. but I rather like the earthy grey or that which has brown in it.. You could introduce rust colours to compliment and then the light whiter colours for the ceiling half could be off whites and with slight yellows.. Little Greene has lovely colours.. Very chalky and dense.. For whites.. Whitening, White lead, Ceviche is nice, stone colours. Grey moss and Furrow for earthy greys. For rich grey Scree is lovely. Bring the wood work into the scheme too.. It makes for a fabulous finish.. Consider too on that rear wall (behind second sofa) a very large mirror to lean up against the wall.. Something like 8 x 6ft if you can get something sizey into the space.. Or a series of long narrow mirrors leant up against could do. If you decided to go with a dark colour this could work as it offsets the colour, bounces the light back into the room and offers a visually interesting element and spatially it makes the room twice the size whatever the size... A few ideas off the top of my head.. : ))

I think continuity from one room to the next helps a give a house a sophisticated feel and helps it to feel bigger to I support the idea of using the same colour of skirting as in the kitchen. The F&B website does suggest these two colours together and I also have darker woodwork than walls. The only thing I would say (having not seen the room) is that light walls can look great with a little dark colour to emphasise something like the skirtings. However you may well choose to paint doors, architraves and stairs in the same Haigh blue so all the woodwork matches- then the balance would be tipped to mainly dark blue which probably isn't your intention. One solution would be to use the light blue on everything, paint the coving soft white and one accent wall of Hague blue (perhaps the inside of the front door and the wall it sits on).
