What to put on living room wall?
Hello Houzzers, can anyone help please - I'm struggling for inspiration here. We have a bare living room wall that needs something on it, but we can't decide what. There's a fireplace but no mantlepiece as we like to keep things 'clean'. I've never wanted the TV to be too dominant so it is wall mounted and offset (it comes out and turns when we want to use it). We are open to replacing the low TV unit (now kind of redundant) with something taller. I love big modern wall art but I don't know if sticking up a big canvas is the answer. I'm also not sure about position any art on this wall to create the best balance. I've included a photo of the opposite wall to show what's there. The wall between the two is a full width bookcase. The ceilings are tall, about 11ft. The wall colour is Farrow & Ball Light Gray (a greenish-grey) and the sofa is red (not pink as it looks in the photo). The floor is unfinished - we plan to remove the carpet and have the floorboards sanded.

Comments (4)What a huge room! Guessing you have a big family and need all the chairs on a regular basis? What was the original intention with the artificial living wall? Is it just artificial grass or do you intend to add to it in some way? I've never seen one before so not sure if that's the finished article. Aside from that, I think it's tricky with a really large table and lots of chairs, for it not to have a bit of a "boardroom" feel, so I'd be adding things that make it feel really homely. Some ideas: paint the walls a darker colour (at the moment all the colours are very similar and pale, I think some contrast would be good). A large room with a light floor and tabletop like that can probably take something quite dark - eg an aubergine or navy. Or if you want to stay neutral, look at some strong greige or beige tones (not grey which will continue the cold feel). Or something like a dusky pink might work with the chairs. Or a light terracotta. I would also put down a large rug if you can source one that's big enough to sit under all the chair legs. And bring in some real plants - a lovely big Monstera or something, in a planter made from natural materials (eg a big basket). Art on the walls - choose something you love and that means something to your family, not something that might be chosen in an office block. And while I'm usually a fan of clear surfaces, I think I'd be putting something on the tabletop itself, for example some candles in glass lanterns, pots of succulents, that kind of thing. Keep all the materials natural (eg cane/wicker, terracotta pots, glass lanterns, linen if you want a table runner, etc) and avoid anything faux, plastic or shiny which will just add to the "hard" feel (perhaps just a small amount of copper/brass to pick up on the light fittings). 7 years agoYes I agree move your large picture to the fireplace, another rectangle will distract from the tv, with a few well chosen accessories. On last nights Great Interior Design Challenge one of the contestants built a decorative screen to sit in front of the tv while not in use, which was an unusual and effective solution

I think a wall of photographs would make a really big statement for you, and the squarish/rectangular shapes of the frames would be cohesive with the shape of the fireplace and your TV.
