Any advice/guidance on how far away light switches for the main light should be from the side of the bed?

I'm not sure there's a hard and fast rule for this. I worked out the placement of ours by positioning the king size bed in the exact centre of the wall then laying in it to see what distance felt comfortable from there for the switch. Ended up with the height of it in alignment with the top of the bed frame/headboard and about 10cm out to the side (the pic shows our bed frame and I've just drawn on the light switch position).

In hotels I've seen them lower down - almost in line with the top of the bedside table but I would worry about knocking things over when trying to find the switch at night (especially spilling a glass of water onto a low down light switch seems an accident waiting to happen).

The way I have it means I can just feel along the edge of the headboard up and know its just slightly over from the top edge. I've never had cause to regret the positioning or getting one installed - in fact its one of my favourite small luxuries! Hope this helps.

Thanks Lauren! Thought it was a relatively low cost luxury when we have to rewire anyway!

Hi Lucy,things have moved on loads over the last few years . We have just started using a system from Ener-j . Their dimmer modules are very compact and fit behind the light fitting . They work off a wireless/battery less switch which can be placed anywhere . The app they have is one of the best I have seen .For a mid range product these are very cost effective. LTS, Would love to know more about your Lightwave system. We were considering installing this throughout the house so you could set 'scenes' etc and have a kill switch by the front door but since Covid 19 are slightly balking at the cost difference between this system which we reckon is the best of what's out there and a standard set of dimmers for third of the price! The upside is all the lovely mood setting, the downside is that they're not the most attractive switches. Are you happy with Lightwave? Any regrets? Anything gone wrong? Do you think you're using it to its full potential? We're sitting on the fence and have to make a decision one way or the other so would love your feed back.

We are having a mixture. Brushed steel in the kitchen to go with the appliances, as they are quite visible at worktop height or in the sides of the island. White flat plate in the hall and drawing room. White plastic upstairs. I agree that it’s better to get white plastic from a reputable supplier which won’t go wrong, than a cheap metal socket or switch which looks the part but will give up within a year, or be a nightmare to fit. Also bear in mind the flat plate ones require a deeper back box (35mm) so if you already have standard 25mm ones you won’t have the flat plate option.

The switch can go anyway for bluetooth (even in a cupboard) as long as there’s power to the light. They then need pairing. You can have an App on your phone.
