what can i do with these large pots?

We've recently moved house and 2 of these large urn planter pots have been left behind. They stand about waist height. I'm wondering about putting them either side of the front door, but what would you plant in them to make them look good. And would you paint them or just leave them concrete finish? Or would they not look right?

I have some similar pots which I have added lovely white lilies which come up year after year. I also added some ivy to the pots to drape down and popped them into the middle of a bed so you can only see the top of the pot. They look great. Alternatively if your bed isn't large enough you could always put them on their side and have plants growing at ground level.

What to plant depends on the style of your exterior and whether or not you would want a colourful arrangement or just green. I'd go for something tall and green:

I'm a big fan of using a single slab of marble/stone rather than tiling window ledges in bathroom's. Partly because it adds an extra luxe element but also because there's no grout to inevitably get discoloured or go mouldy. You could then add a pretty wooden tray on top with some bathroom essentials or plants like suggested above.

How about keeping the gravel as it is - it keeps the weeds down after all and is low maintenance but planting something like lavender through it - nice smelling, will soften the edges and required very little looking after except for a cutdown once a year - can't tell exact scale but 7-10 3l lavender plants planted through could make a big difference pretty quickly and inexpensively

Hi - how I envy you that big kitchen; mine is tiny. I went for a warm cream with a splashback in bright red. You could perhaps add bright red accessories? I would go for a slightly darker, warmer shade of the walls, I would put large, bright ornaments on top of the cupboards (I particularly like hens and roosters) - they do need to be big though, otherwise they'll get lost. I'm sure you're going to have a table and chairs; my choice would be light wood, round, and maybe brightly coloured chairs to contrast the black tiles. Or, you go opt for a corner seating arrangement with comfy upholstered seating and bright cushions. Plants are an absolute must for me and that corner, to the left of the door, is crying out for a beautiful palm.....that is, if you don't opt for the corner seating! I would then place my plant(s) at, or near, the end of your counter. There are some very realistic "fake" candles around now - I have two which I've put into Moroccan style lamps which are only about 10 - 12" high. One sits of the floor, the other on a small table; they're pretty through the day and at night they flicker and cast patterns on the walls. I wish you well with whatever your choices - have fun and play around with it.

Agree with Daisy re laminate Ian deep enough etc We went for quartz which has a slight marble effect. That island is huge! I would advise going for something that’s easy to clean as well as our worktop is a mid grey and only 2.4m wide but it’s hard work cleaning. It’s 1m deep as well which is plenty for seating along the back and with a hob on. If you can only afford laminate then perhaps look at shrinking the depth? I don’t know if they make laminate that length though. Corina might do but ouch, that is so expensive!

I would probably use them to pot herbs, Thyme, Rosemary, Fennel, Bay tree or Lavender. They will give a lovely smell as your walking past and useful to cook with if placed by the back door.

Great pots! I think it's a great idea to have them on either side of your front door, it will make it feel very regal! What you put in them depends completely on the style of your house/front garden. The classic option would be ball topiaries like bay trees and you can then add more colourful flowers or plants at its base that overflow a little like this:

I would definitely not paint the pots though. And if you go for an "overflow" option I would try to keep it mild so it doesn't totally hide the shape of the shape of the pots as they look nice.

Thanks for all your great suggestions! I have photoshopped some trees into the pots - would appreciate your thoughts! I have popped them in front of our current front door which is incredibly ugly...do you have any ideas on how i can improve this without replacing the the whole frame at present. We are currently getting prices to replace it but they are very pricey and beyond budget at present!

Also will attach a picture of the whole house frontage so you can get the idea
