What sofa works in a large modern kitchen living area?

Massive open plan kitchen with island block and large modern table with Bertoia chairs. Floor to ceiling window doors open up to outside area. It's a nice place to sit but not always round the table. There is a large TV mounted on the wall

Hi Gill,

I think modular sofas work well in contemporary spaces/extensions. Maybe in a grey or cream? Some ideas/examples:

Hi Gill. We would recommend going to Camerich www.camerich.co.uk They have 'modular' sofas which you can build up to the size you need. It also means that down the line, if you ever want to you can add on modules if you want to make it bigger, or take away modules to make it smaller. Lead times are long about 10-14 weeks but they can offer a loan sofa service. Also, their staff are trained in sketch up so you can take floor plans in and they will design a sofa for you. If you like sound of that, we'd be happy to give you access to our trade discount with them to get you the best price. Our recommendation would be the Clouds sofa. Best of luck! Ahahah! Nowhere near an artist... but I used to score good marks at technical drawings at school! Thank you so much for the floor plans! They are giving me good points to think about! Currently the other half of the island hides an under the counter fridge. However I would prefer not to have a power outlet there... I don't like the idea to drill a hole in the new floor :) Just in case I decide to get rid of the island in future. Also... I have bad news... today the heater engineer told me that the boiler can't be moved into the eaves storage: there isn't enough space. However he came up with a different idea: move it on to the small wall between the stairs and the sink. Ideally I would hide it behind a kitchen cabinet... but I don't plan to get a custom build kitchen... they are just too expensive. So... I can't have a bespoke cabinet. My idea then is to build a short wall there and hide the boiler behind it. If you look at my drawings, you'll see that the wall there is larger than in the original photos... Unfortunately it means that i won't be able to accomodate the refrigerated drawers that you suggested, sorry. I'd like to get rid of the island... unfortunately without it I won't have enough space for all the cabinets and appliances. BTW... I really like your plans! I need to work out how to implement your ideas taking into consideration some of the constrains of the space available.

Hello Moneera, A very relaxing space you have and I hope you really enjoy living in your new place.. What about a really large mirror that you could just lean against that wall in the dining area.. Something with a frame that's painted the same colour as the wall would really give an interesting focus along with light and the illusion of a bigger room.. Even really big rooms look good with huge mirrors.. Ebay has a good online mirror shop that sells mirrors of all designs up to 8ft.. It would add a dramatic backdrop to the dining area and work beautifully throughout the day. For the other side, living room side, you could create a really interesting shelving artwork with that corner next to the window.. If you were to get some box type shelves and paint them the colour of the walls and possibly some in an accent colour... you could fix them to the wall and have nooks and interesting levels to place nice pieces on and some perhaps that swivel on hidden hinges, so they can pivot and close.. If you want to hide some things... You create a textured piece of wall art that also has a function... You could also carry this theme into the room behind the sofa just in part.. There is a strong geometric theme with your sofa and cubes and thinking of how to apply this aesthetic to other areas of the room... So using the box idea to create a screen and shelving system, that both adds to creating a separate room divider/bookcase/art instillation. It's an artistic way to create bespoke shelving which can be accessed from both sides.. It still needs to be quite open in order to see through to the both sides... You could have boxes with backs which then become open as they continue upwards to become a more transparent look.. I have tried to find you some images to show you what I mean but you could use all 3 as a point of inspiration to create a bespoke look if you liked the idea...... A sheepskin for the back of the sofa and some lovely cushions would be really fantastic too.. : ))

It's an awkward one as a lot of the kitchen is in the dining area, and the space that you don't want to have a table & chairs is opposite the sink. You could put one of the armchairs there. Keep the sofa where one is at the moment. You could go for a darker cognac leather or dark grey. Grey tones go with the brick. A nice bright rug would look good, but I'd keep the walls light and airy as they are now. In order to place something like this arrangement, you will have an armchair near to the sink. Although the kitchen is lovely...........If you ever have the budget, i'd consider moving the kitchen around. Change the island possibly for a smaller one and turn the side run of units along the left hand wall to across the room for 'U' Shape, giving you a much better sofa / lounge area.

I found a manufacturer called 'Kasthall' http://www.kasthall.com/en/products who make beautiful rugs of the type I was looking for but they are pricey (5k). I ended up not being able to stomach that and opted for (as suggested by Man About The House and Carolina) a Louis de Poortere carpet, which they bound/edged for me. https://www.louisdepoortere.be/miuccia.html The carpet is very thin, comfortable and high quality and it ended up being much cheaper than a rug (£1500). Thanks for the suggestions - you were spot on.
