I think given the description above I would look at maybe going somewhere between. A pallete of light greys or pale neutrals for the majority of the cabinetry, with a strong feature colour in a selected area. Have you started planning the layout yet? An island or tall pantry or appliance cupboards may be the perfect place to do this. It is amazing how a bold dark tone against a crisp white wall can create the illusion of extra light, adding a bright feel to the space. In terms of the worktop, I think I would look at a reflective surface such as a white quartz, the light reflective surface will help to throw the light coming down from the velux windows back up to the walls. If an island was part of the deisgn I would maybe consider a warmer wood tone for the tops here, depending on your preferred style of cabinetry. With more traditional cabinets oak is an obvious choice (although I like Ash as a less common alternative, with fantastic character). For a more contemporary space walnut or wedge could create some of the contrast you are looking for, and compliment the darker tones in the feature cabinets. Obviously this is a bolder choice, and you may feel more comfortable carrying the same surfaces right through. As a final note if you really do think the area will be a little dark, bear in mind that mushroom tones can often end up looking very brown in subdued lighting, so consider where you want to use them carefully. Thanks, Colourhappy. I'm still struggling with deciding. Not sure if I messed up the votes due to the wrong info ie we aren't having side porches now and I did forget to split the one room down on the vote option so it looks like it's one large room instead. As we don't use the dining room (only time we do is for a dinner party), it makes sense to us to put it in the smaller section and keep the original rooms which gives us a lot more useful storage/utility room. Only thing putting me off is that we need to keep the chimney in the dining area as we can't put the wood burner in the lounge as the back as it's too near a window. Doh. I might start a new thread and just ask people why they prefer one over the other as I think people just vote in the poll and don't read the thread.

I wouldn't bother as I would imagine a lot of it will be covered up by the loo etc. However i do sympathise, we (I say we, I hid upstairs and the OH did the deed) had a very awkward conversation and a very mardy and petulant tiler once, when we had our downstairs cloak room done. In a room which was under 1 m wide he had laid the floor tiles which were 40 x 40cms in a way that was easier for him because he had less cuts to make (on porcelain tiles), but it meant that there was an off centre grout line down the centre of the room (and loo) when he should have laid a full time down the middle and cut tiles to fit each side. He also didn't have a central grout line or full tile at the door threshold either. We made him do it again, under much protest and mumbling on his part. But we needed it done quickly for a planned house warming party we were having, so we just carried on with him. I bitterly regret allowing him to carry on and despite my constant desire to get them redone every time I go in there, we've not yet managed to find a combination of the money, the time or the right person to re-do it. Incidentally, the whole downstairs cloakroom project taught me a valuable lesson, which I've always remembered and seems to hold true every time. There's usually a good reason why a trades person is available at short notice for a project, for a relatively comparatively cheap price..........it's usually because they're not very good.

Ok, this is embarrassing. We STILL haven’t had it done. We’ve had structural reports and building regs done. Then another builder came round to quote... and... he thinks we should do it another way. Essentially he suggested what Minipie and Rinq suggested!! 👏👏👏 I’ve put a shambolic plan below. Basically keeping the utility (again, as suggested by you guys, I’ve realised I cannot live without a utility - especially now we have a dog!). So the builder said it would be cheaper and just as effective to push the bifolds down and remove the wall in between. So, now my concern is, will we have enough space for a seating area and dining table. If not, I’m concerned it’ll be a big space with not much in it? New wall in red.
