Need help for painting walls in my cottage

I have painted my cottage 23ft living room and hall up the stairs and above tallow F&B, but would like to paint walls as light as possible. Not PBW, I am warming to All White F&B, Shirting L&G or pointing. Decorator coming in a few days help! The room is north facing.

I agree that keeping the theme throughout a property with regards wall colour adds to the synergy and flow of the place. Our own cottage walls are all the same colour in every room. However, we accessorize with differrent accent colours that work well room to room.

Sticking to the warmer neutrals will help in the north facing rooms as the cooler ones can make them look colder. However, I believe that the accent colours can soon warm the cooler ones up.

White Tie by F&B is a good neutral tone to work with, and i prefer to paint skirtings, architraves and possibly the internal doors ( depending on type ) in all the same colour, which also adds to space and flow.

I'd highly recommend that you go for either Dulux and have the paint mixed to type in the same shade ie Emulsion for the Walls and Satinwood for the woodwork, or Valspar at B&Q ( used to be Crown ), infinitely better paint than F&B.

I agree with man about the house, stick to warmer neutrals as pure white can look a bit cold in a large area, just off whites are great! Also accessories with warmer colours.

I would stay with the same colour for all walls as it will make your house flow from one room to the other. Agree with Brandi, keep your ceiling white, always look fresh. Add plain curtains and play around with colours in the cushions and acessories. depends on what colours you love. Try to stay with 3 colours. Maybe use the 2 different hues by painting a acsent wall with one rather than the ceiling.

Can't you just board over them? NZ & French houses don't have exposed pipework, it's all in the walls as they have timber frame houses. I'd get a builder to build a timber framework and board over the top also boxing in the waste disposal. If you want acess to the waste disposal, you could make it look like a cupboard. Get a few quotes and see what the cost would be, it's probably less than you think.

Hello! Painting your units is a good way to make the kitchen feel fresh and new without spending a bomb on it, and makes the kitchen feel a bit more 'you'. The colours you are suggesting sound great, the pitch blue is a really bold colour that I think could look quite quirky and a little quaint, the one down side is it you have don't have much light it will absorb a lot of it and make the kitchen seem darker but I suppose you are the best to gauge this since it depends on where your windows face and all sorts. If you want the colours to be forgiving on the bottom, use the more forgiving finish on the bottom too and the same on the top to match. Replace the handles without leaving a mark means using some all purpose filler (or wood filler if you have it/feeling fancy enough to buy some especially) to fill in the holes with an old butter knife and scraping off the excess, leaving this to dry then using sand paper to make it flat, don't be afraid to scratch into the wood a little since you will be painting over it before fixing on the new handles. P120 sandpaper will give a much better finish than P60 but will take longer, P values can range but the higher the number the better the finish (P60 would mean that there are 60 bits of grit on average occupying a quare inch so the grit particles are larger than P120 paper) for the work you are doing I'd recommend P120.

I notice that it's peeling in the corners. Is it coming off anywhere else? If not, chances are that the plaster hadn't dried out properly, even if the plaster had gone pale and looked to have completely dried, the joins always take longer. As for remedying it, the only way is to sand everything back and start again. Personally I wouldn't add PVA to your paint as it is a plastic and while it may stick now, it will create exactly the same problem when painting in the future, e.g. paint won't bond to it and will peel off. I would also recommend using a normal emulsion rather than eggshell on walls. Eggshell is intended for woodwork.

Thank you both so much as I am going to take your advice about using Dulux or Valspar.. this site comes into its own at times like this. I am trying to attach a photos of my kitchen that leads off the living room. I have Ivory Laura Ashley in kitchen, Pointing F &B in the spare bedroom and tallow F&B in the front room I am changing..
