Advice for staircases carpet or runners?

Hello Houzzers!

We are re-carpeting our house. It's a typical edwardian terraced house, to which we have added a dormer in the loft. So there is a staircase from the ground floor to the first floor accross the house right to left, a landing area and corridor that goes back left to right and then a new wooden staircase that goes up to the loft (almost winder type or spiral but not fully). The loft bedroom and the 1st floor bedrooms are all carpetted in the same colour, a neutral grey/beige.

We tought of putting a runner (striped or textured?) from ground floor to the first floor.

But what would we do with the second fight of stairs? A runner would be nice as it would look like the other staircase - but then, do we put the runner also in the landing/corridor? Or do we use the same carpet from the bedrooms for the corridor and continue with it up through the second staircases to the loft? if we did this, the stairs would look different from each other. And should we make the staircase carpet up to the loft a runner formar or end to end?

Help, please!! we need to decide asap and we've been stuck on this decision for 2 weeks now..!!

Hi Maggie. We are doing the same but have been fortunate enough to have an interior designer friend who has given us great advice:

- Ground to 1st floor stairs: runner with taped sides and carpet rods. This carpet is different to all of the others and finishes at the top step.
-1st floor landing, stairs from 1st to 2nd and 2nd floor landing in a dark grey carpet all the way to the edge as far as possible - better for hiding marks, wear etc. These areas don't 'normally' have runners.
- All bedrooms except master are in a lighter grey.
- Master bedroom in a slightly more luxurious carpet.

I hope that helps a little. I really wouldn't worry about having different carpets on the stairs. The ground floor stairs are normally a little more elaborate as this is what you see on entering the house. Good luck with it all.

I would always keep the runners just for the staircases. As above, I think it's accepted that the main staircase runner can be different ie striped, but that it should blend with the carpet that it meets on the landing. Once on to the bedroom levels, i don't think it matters if the second staircase matches the main one, just that it matches the main carpet.

Our main stair runner we had made out of the carpet that's on the first and second floor. Our second staircase too. We toyed with the idea of a runner on the second one, but it just looked out of place in our house, so we went for carpet side to side.

@Sanah - rubbish at internet stuff but you can see the entire range of Nourison's Mondrian Runners at theRUGSELLER.co.uk where mine are. About 8 different patterns including stripes. Mine is code MON66 and £89, but I can't seem to find it online. Interestingly the range is not on Nourison's own main website. Maybe discontinued. There are larger hall runners, rugs and circular rugs too. Good luck

On a practical level, it certainly hurts if you fall on hard stairs. But perhaps it is easier to slip in the first place on carpeted stairs? I'd agree with your mixed view, that it totally depends on the space and style intended.

Don’t feel bad about complaining. They should have done a better job! My mums hall carpet was laid by Allied Carpets years ago. When I visited I saw it finished short by about 1 1/2 inches leading up to the front door! What??? I went in store and politely explained the problem. They promptly took up the new carpet and then put down a replacement one which was fitted right up to the door. Shame as you bought local and independent and they let you down. One word of warning - when complaining always be polite, get them on your side - you always attract more bees with honey than vinegar! Good luck.

Thank you all for your comments .. You have helped me decide that the stripy carpet does not work , that was my gut feeling all along . Unfortunately I have already ordered it from roger oates so will have to foot a fee to cancel or change for different ! As for the tiled floor I will try and see what best I can do to clean up , we have done it once a few years ago . I want to keep it . Thank you again .

Hi Maggie

I used to live in an Edwardian terrace which had a carpet with runners when we moved in, although the carpet wasn't particularly special it looked nice with the flashing (the parts down the walls) going down the sides however I was constantly hoovering the wood bits either side.

When we got some money together we bought a neutral pale cream carpet which went full width, then crossed the landing and went up the second flight, I never looked back! We still had all the other architectural features in the house to enjoy but this made it a more seamless space and made it appear bigger. The bedrooms and living spaces were all wood floors so we weren't matching colours and styles.

Advice for staircases carpet or runners?
