Hallway Lighting and Brightness

Hi there,

Looking for lighting advice for my hallway. I currently have a modern light that I'm looking to change. It takes 5 x GU10 bulbs. I find the lighting is adequate, it's not on a dimmer and I don't plan to install one.

I want to install the light below but on the details it says that the bulb required is gls bulb, e27 holder, maximum 40w. I'm not sure with the new lighting whether that will be bright enough. It sounds pretty low based on the wattage and the corresponding lumens which is 400+.

Hi Jo,

This is a good question! Our lighting design team take great pride in lighting for our projects as there are many technical factors to consider such as lumens, colour temperature, compatibility etc.

With your scenario I would recommend an ENLITE 9w GLS E27 LED lamp http://enlitelighting.com/Lighting-Products/LED-Lamps/EDim-Dimmable-Lamps/240V-9W-GLS-Dimmable-E27-LED-Lamp-4.aspx

This lamp is dimmable, most LED lamps incorporate dimmable functionality now even if you don’t require it. The great thing about LED lamps is that they use less power (i.e. your electrical bill wouldn’t be as high!), last longer and most can provide near enough the same light as the ‘old style’ lamps. This particular one is 810 lumens which is equal to about 60w and comes in a warm white colour temperature (2700k).

You can purchase this lamp at many electrical wholesalers. If you’re unable to purchase this particular lamp, then look for at least 800 lumens in LED to provide light greater than 40w.

Well, there's probably nothing to be done about it, unless you have an HOA or Condo Board or something. So I guess I'd have to get over it. Any chance they're going to change the carpet?

I leave a lamp on permanently on my landing, yes I know it's bad for the planet not to mention my budget but that's what you get for living in a 250 year old house with too little natural light.

Thank for all the comments. We will get the radiator cover. As for the paneling...I not sure this is in keeping with the Scandanavian theme...eventhou the master bedroom does have paneling which is very nice. We will likely get a bespoke storage unit made on the other side of the bathroom. Something a little fancier to the one already there which houses the washing machine/ dryer and laundry products. Overtime I think we will get a better feel for what works best - art, picture frames, mirrors etc... Keep the suggestions coming!!

Ah no problem! For a truly contemporary look I would suggest concealed floating lighting. This is usually either achieved with a moulding just below the ceiling with LED strip uplighters or by running the LEDs around custom cut panels which use hidden fixings to 'float' it 5cm or so from the ceiling. Alternatively you can use wall lights (you can even mount several onto another floating wall panel to create a real 'wow' factor!).

Hi,

The quick answer is YES, this effectively going to be a 5th of the light that you currently have. However, lighting is NOT all about how many watts the bulb / lamp is that you're employing. It's about LUMENS. This how bright it is, and also you may wish to consider the temperature (warmth) of the light, especially when picking LEDs.

E.g. 12W LED will give you the same Lumens output as a 60W incandescent - 750 / 850 Lumens and only using a fifth of the energy!

Thanks for your replies everyone. I ordered the light but found I didn't like it anyway. It would have been fine light-wise as I think the 40w was in the new rating so could have had an led bulb... Still looking for my lights!
