Which kitchen layout is best?

At Houzz, kitchens are never far from our thoughts! This time we're curious as to which one of the many varied layouts you like best.

Some kitchen layouts, like "one wall", are fairly self explanatory, but others like "peninsula", which is either horseshoe or L-shaped but with a breakfast bar, are a little less familiar.

Other, I'd go for L shape with an island, probably tall units on one wall with just base units on the other. Not like my current layout which doesn't really fall into any of the categories

I know what you mean about taking advantage of the view, but I think you'll find that you'll still be able to see it from most of the couch even if it is against the wall. With a room that wide, I wouldn't waste all the space that is currently behind the couch. And you can move your funky chair to the right so it is directly in front of the window, which will be the best place to see the view, and probably a better distance to swivel around and see the tele. I would think that you will want more work surface in the kitchen - you seem like entertainers and cooks if you are going to use one of the bedrooms as a dining room. So I would have an island unit where you can sit on one side and have extra storage and a counter top. You can get lovely ones that are either fixed or on castors (the good quality ones lock properly in place, the cheap ones tend to wobble whenever you try and cut something - ugh) and you could just put two bar stools near it. I don't know if you want me to stick my nose into the dining room, but ... I love the shape and style of your dining table and chairs but I don't think you'll be able to fit a table with six chairs in a room that is 9'7" x 9' unless you don't plan on any humans sitting in the chairs :) Also, my experience with new builds and buying off plan is that the rooms don't always quite match the dimensions in the plan. They might only be off by a few inches, but I wouldn't buy any new furniture for that room until you are there. Fingers crossed it might end up bigger than the plan dimensions!

I am not going to cast a vote, but would just offer some advice on thinking about the ergonomics of the space you want to create. People have mentioned the Golden Triangle in the context of the kitchen, which is a good guide for the kitchen layout, but thinking about the wider layout it is really important to think about how you, and others who share your space, actually use the space. How many of you will be "working" in the kitchen at any one time? Don't give up a disproportionate amount of real estate to the kitchen area - if storage is the driver then think of other ways of storing items, such as contemporary dresser in your dining area etc. Think about where the majority of occupants want to get to most frequently when they first enter the space; to a sofa, a dining table or a kitchen counter? Apply the 80-20 rule and maximise efficiency for the most frequent activities. What is happening immediately outside the space? Is it a space that looks better lit up in the evening when you are dining, or is it a space you want to gaze out at during the day? What else do you do at the dining table? Does someone work at it during the day? Is light a consideration? Will you have a TV on the wall? It may be good to have a wall away from direct sunlight as this can impair the visibility of a screen. So much to think about, but it really pays to spend some time upfront thinking about the use. Hi Alexander I think the double doors in option 2 sit better with the double doors entering the kitchen. Obviously these need to be pocket to avoid crashing with the Kitchen doors! With option 1 you are likely to only utilise one of the sliding doors due to the kitchen door clash! Hope this helps Regards Helen

My preference is for something in between - option 1 but without the three smaller high level cupboards, with outer wall cupboards that go up to the ceiling, and with the extractor of option 2.

I like island and peninsula layouts but it depends on the size of space and shape. I voted for island.

I said 'other' because regardless of what I like the best, it's all down to the specific space you're dealing with. I love the galley kitchen in the first image because it's designed perfectly for the space - but I wouldn't want a galley kitchen myself, unless I have a property similar to the one in the photo. Same with islands - great if you have the space and sometimes they work with a single wall, L-Shape or U-Shape, but don't shoehorn one in if it just won't fit. The room, the space, the outlook and how you use it will best determine what's the best type of kitchen in that particular circumstance.

I said "Other" for the same reason as angelboyman above. The best design is the one which suits that particular property best. We are renovating our kitchen (narrow, with a door at each end) and we are getting a galley because that makes best use of the space. In a different situation, I would love an island or a kitchen/breakfast room with a peninsula, but they aren't options here.
