Daughter's bedroom help.
Obviously the old, single bed base needs to go (been asking other half for months to get rid of it). The cupboard is an airing cupboard and obviously the drawers are for their clothes, we are really limited on space and storage in this house. We weren't meant to be staying here long but unfortunately due to finances etc were having to make the most of a bad job. It's quite a dark room and I'm aware the the soft toys in the window should be moved to let more natural light in.
I would like to paint the whole room a light pink (quite liked rose quartz) something that they will like but not too garish and dark and something that won't date easily. Also quite liked the idea of a feature wall with some wall paper but due to the dimensions of the room I have a feeling that (without it looking rather odd) that won't be possible. I'm going to put some shelves up for books, soft toys etc but I was wondering if anybody else could give me some pointers. Sorry about the mess and the clutter, I've been stripping all of the beds and thought I'd take some pictures and post while I had a spare 15 minutes. Thanks in advance.

Comments (6)Hi Why cant you close that hole up where the ladder goes and install new stairs (standard ) on the wall to your right or left of the doorway? Taking up the whole wall? You would lose 1m max of the width of the room and could possible get the bed under the stairs along the window wall. Forgive me if im wrong and theres not enough space? If it needs to be narrow then make a ladder similar to what you have now just less shallow instead of the stairs. I would love to have a look and advise. Comments (11)So a dormer loft conversion costs the same as a side extension? It sounds like you'll be getting more space for the side extension for the same amount of money then. Have you had a look at other bungalows down your road or area that have had extensions vs no extensions and see what they have sold for, then you can see if it's worth it but who knows what the market will be like in a couple of years time. In terms of appealing to more when selling, people probably would prefer bedrooms upstairs but if bedrooms are larger and downstairs is huge it will be more attractive to buyers ( I think ) especially if there is a large family. Lots of new builds have a bedroom downstairs so it's not unusual plus families considering a bungalow won't be looking for the norm in terms of layout so 2 bedrooms downstairs is fine. You can also ask your estate agent that sold you the bungalow, get their thoughts on what is attractive to buyers, I'm sure they'll be helpful in case you'll use them in the future :-)....See More

7 years agoHow annoying, I bet the wall is only short by a few cms :( can you fit a clothes rail in the airing cupboard at all? If the rooms downstairs are large then maybe see if you can keep some toys down there to free space? Perhaps add a small sheepskin rug, try ikea or dunelm in front of the chest at the end of the bed as it will be soft to kneel on. As they share a room, their names above the beds will also look nice. I'd look for a large acrylic mirror sheet for opposite the bed, eBay seem to have a few although I found this one elsewhere that they may like but it's only 90x30! I'd also get some storage for under the bed, again probably ikea. If you were to paint the bed and I think chalk paint might be a cheap solution then maybe you could replace the ikea trunk with something that has more storage? Either 2nd hand or ikea again, you could also paint that in the chalk paint and add decals or paint a stencil to customise it

I'd stay with light colours like you said to stop the room from looking too dark down at the bottom end. I find greys and pinks like in the photo below will be really good for both the girls ages and won't date as they grow older. Instead of wallpaper how about just using 2 paint colours on the walls, this way if they accidentally mark the walls whilst playing you can just touch the paint up instead of having to live with marked wallpaper. Shelving will look great because you can accessorise it with cute little frames and bunting, which again can be easily changed as the girls get older.
To help with storage try googling 'bunk beds with storage' this way you're killing 2 birds with one stone, the girls can keep their toys tidied away when not in use which in turn will help the room feel bigger in itself.

7 years agoThese are some of the ideas I've had so far. I was thinking of painting the wall where the head of their bunk bed goes in the grey and then the rest of their room in the pink. At first I was concerned that the pink was too bright for the look I'm going for but I've bought some tester pots and an fairly happy with them. I've also bought some gold wall polka dots which I thought would look nice on either the grey or the pink. Loved the quote as well, that is going to go on the wall above my daughter's dresser (next to the airing cupboard) I've also bought them a grey ceiling canopy (I'm going to hang it in front of the airing cupboard door) and am going to accessorise with some gold, silver/grey and dusty pink cushions and maybe a faux sheepskin mat. I will probably get some new curtains as well. I was just wondering what you thought of my ideas?

7 years agoThought I would update on the progress of our daughter's room. The colour change alone has made a HUGE difference! Who knew magnolia could be such a darkening colour?! So pleased I've changed it. Still got a few bits and bobs to do. I need new curtains, under bed storage, I've got a matching pendant light fitting on order for the other light in their room, I've got a grey canopy coming which is going to be hung from the ceiling in front of the airing cupboard, I'm going to paint the window recess in the grey and also the entrance walls to the room are going to be painted grey as well, new curtains perhaps, ordered a gold wall sticker to go above the white dresser (I usually hate wall stickers but it's a Shakespeare quote and I though it appropriate!) will also buy a nice, big, light pink/grey rug and perhaps some light pink curtains that are floor length. I'm trying to think of somewhere suitable to add some shelving. Originally I was going to add some on the wall at the head of their bed but it's one of them awful cardboard, fake walls so no chance (the paint took absolutely ages to dry on it as well!!!). Perhaps on the stud wall opposite the window but I will see how brave I'm feeling! I used dulux light and space Spring Rose and Dulux polished pebble in the end. Will post final pictures when I've got it all completed.

7 years agoPicture of said curtains! It's one I took earlier today, there are butterflies on the bottom and they are around 5/6 inches from the floor. Thought I'd better add an actual picture of them.
